Introduction Functionality Results Advantages Disadvantages Applications Conclusion

INTRODUCTION
Devices with small size have some limitations Since we cant make buttons and screens larger without losing the benefit of small size. The main reason for appropriating the human body as an input device are: (i) roughly we have two meter external square surface area (ii) easily accessible by hands

INTRODUCTION (contd)

Skinput turns our body into touch screen interface (on body projection and on body sensing) Thus we can use our own skin as input canvas This technology uses the screen as the tracking surface or the unique input device

FUNCTIONALITY

Giving input through skin Was developed by Chris Harrison (Carnegie Mellon University), Desney Tan and Dan Morris, Microsoft. Skinput turns the body into a touch screen interface

TECHNOLOGY USED

Skinput, the system is a combination of two technologies: the ability to detect the ultra low frequency sound and the Pico projectors Tiny pico projector applies the use of projector in a handheld device. An acoustic detector detects the ultra low frequency

HOW IT WORKS
It

uses a microchip-sized Pico projector to display menu It is known as pocket projector or mobile projector An acoustic detector to detect sound vibration

BIO ACOUSTICS: SENSING

These signals need to be sensed or worked upon. Various sensors like conventional microphones, accelerometers, piezo contact microphones are present. Bone conduction microphones are better. Array of tuned vibration sensors are present (cantilevered piezo films).

SENSING: ARM BAND

This done by wearing the wave sensor armband.

PROCESSING

An audio interface is captured from sensors and is converted to digital signal form. This is connected to the a pc via Bluetooth. A software to match sound frequencies to specific skin locations is used. Calculations are made and appropriate tap positions are located and corresponding action is implemented.

EXPERIMENTS
Experiments were conducted taking several locations on the arm and with different number. Example: Fore arm Whole arm, etc.

RESULTS

It was observed that the efficiency was highest when fore arm (below the elbow) was considered.(95.5%) Various efficiency values were observed and noted down. The results also depended on other factors like BMI, etc.

PROJECTION ON THE ARM

ADVANTAGES

No need to interact with the gadget directly Dont have to worry about keypad People with larger fingers get trouble in navigating tiny buttons on keyboards and mobile phones. With skinput that problem disappears.

DISADVANTAGES
1.Many people would not wear a very big band around their arm for the day just to have this product. 2.Individuals with visible disabilities such as amputated arms or the blind cannot use this product. 3.Skinput while driving is dangerous.

APPLICATIONS

Mobile Gaming i-pods Music players

CONCLUSION

The approach to appropriating the human body as an input surface is presented . A novel variable bio acoustic used to detect and localize finger taps on the hand and the forearm is designed. This system performs very well if the body is in motion.
