DEFINE AND CONCEPT OF LISTENING SKILL


Listening is the act of hearing attentively It also known as knowledge proses of phonology, syntax, semantics and information delivered to listener Can be also defined as, More than just hearing and to understand and interpret the meaning of a conversation Thomlison (1984) listening skill ia a active proses, that important for effective communication

Listening skills involve etiquette, asking for clarification, showing empathy and providing an appropriate response It is an active process. When listening, we direct attention to the act of hearing. Listening involves an intention both to hear and to understand what is heard. Hearing may be natural, but listening is a skill.

FACTOR AFFECTING LISTENING PROBLEM


Listeners listen word for word. Listeners lack cultural or background knowledge. Speakers use too many unfamiliar words. Listening takes too much effort and concentration. Recordings are not always clear and are difficult to follow. Speakers accents are unfamiliar. Tasks are too difficult. Listeners cannot recognize words they know when they hear them.

Lets try our skill at making compound sentences : a)The man was sick. The woman was sick. c)John ate bananas. Jane ate oranges.

What is the past tense form for these words : a)go b)eat c)take d) break e) fly f) fall

ASSESSING LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Verbs :

Prepositions : Ask students to perform action


Show pictures of similar objects but in different positions and ask student to point to the picture in the position named. Why cant you use different objects? How else can you test for understanding of prepositions?

Tenses :

Use pictures of an action in different stages of completion : one picture of an action in progress, one before the action has taken Place and one indicating that the action is completed
Ask students to point to : The boy is eating. The boy has eaten. The boy is going to eat.

Understanding directions and instructions Give simple instructions and ask students to perform the action.

Understanding complex sentences

Combine these sentences : a)Aida did not come to school. Aida had a fever. c)John is four years old. John is my neighbour. e)He did not win. He did not give up hope.

Did you as a teacher try to carry out discussions with your students? Was it difficult?
