QoS Provisioning in NGN IPTV

Umer Mushtaq Mir CIT / 07 / 2011

IPTV
Digital television services over Internet Protocol (IP) Services beyond traditional cable television Integration of broadcasting and telecommunication

Motivation
Most highly visible application of (next gen networks)NGN
Two-way data flow (video on demand) Greater personalisation / tailored advertising

Potential to generate multiple revenue streams over the same core network Offset the costs of implementation

IPTV and Internet TV

IPTV
managed/closed network

Internet TV
delivered via open-internet / unmanaged network

A TV like quality of service localized

No guaranteed quality of service inter-continental e.g. youtube

Basic Architecture

Architecture contd
Core networks
MPLS IP Multicast

Access Networks
FFTx ethernet DSL/ADSL IEEE 802.11n

Access Devices
set top box, PC, smart phones

IP Multicast
one channel many users Saves server bandwidth and network load

Multicasting issues
scalability different users having different service level agreements on the same multicast tree

Technical challenges
QoS and traffic management Congestion control(TCP not suitable for real time applications) Compatibility Of Communication and Broadcasting Security and Privacy standardisation

Factors affecting QoS in IPTV

Compressing techniques (B.W. Vs Quality) Admission control schemes
Routing

Ensuring QoS
Bandwidth overprovisioning Using efficient compression algorithms Efficient Routing / Traffic engineering
MPLS and constriant-based routing provide automatic TE and fast routing

IEEE 802.11n WLAN

High throughput (100 600 Mbits/s)
uses 40 MHz spectrum OFDM and MIMO technology multiple modulation and coding schemes aggregation of MAC frames & block ack. (BA)

Backward compatible with older versions

IEEE 802.11n over MPLS can be useful to provide IPTV wirelessly

Conclusion
Conditions most favourable for IPTV IPTV needs QoS gaurantees IEEE 802.11n to provide wireless IPTV

Work done
Scenario building Parameter selection Ongoing work
simulations in MPLS , simulations in wi-fi

Future Work
Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11n over IP Multicast / MPLS using Omnet++ in terms of throughput, packet loss , delay , jitter, by varying no. of frames in an aggregated frame ,no. of MIMO streams, coding and modulation schemes, BA , no. of nodes etc.
