DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Regulator Operating Modes Automatic Voltage Regulation Mode:

In the automatic voltage regulation mode, both the DVR2000E and DVR2000EC regulators function by sensing the generator output voltage, and automatically adjusting the DC output voltage to the exciter field as necessary to maintain generator terminal voltage at the regulation set point.

Ref: IOM, Page 21

21

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Regulator Operating Modes Field Current Regulation (FCR) (Manual) Mode: In Field Current Regulation (FCR) Mode operation, also known as Manual Mode, both the DVR2000E and DVR2000EC regulators will maintain DC excitation current at a set level. The current-level set point is adjustable from 0 to 3 Adc.

NOTE: The Field Current Regulation (FCR) Mode operation, also

known as Manual Mode, should only be used for diagnostics and not for normal operation.

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Regulator Operating Modes VAR Control Mode In the VAR Control Mode, the DVR2000EC regulator will maintain generator VARs (volt-amperes reactive) at a set level when the generator is paralleled with an infinite bus such as the Public Utility. The regulator calculates generator VARs using the sensed generator output voltage and the load current supplied by the paralleling current transformer, and then adjusts the dc excitation current to maintain generator output VARs at the set level.

NOTE: This mode is ONLY available with the DVR2000EC model regulator.
Ref: IOM, Page 21 23

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Regulator Operating Modes Power Factor Control Mode In the Power Factor Control Mode, the DVR2000EC regulator will maintain generator power factor at a set level when the generator is paralleled with an infinite bus such as the Public Utility. The regulator calculates generator power factor using the sensed generator output voltage and the load current supplied by the paralleling current transformer, and then adjusts the dc excitation current to maintain generator power factor at the set level.

NOTE: This mode is ONLY available with the DVR2000EC model regulator.

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Operating Features Reactive Droop Compensation:

Both model DVR2000E and DVR2000EC regulators provide a built in reactive droop compensation feature to assist in parallel generator operation. When this feature is enabled, the regulators calculate the reactive portion of the generator load using the sensed generator output voltage and current quantities, and then modify the voltage set point accordingly.

NOTE: Reactive droop compensation requires the addition of a paralleling current transformer which is not furnished with the regulator unless called out on the purchase order.

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Operating Features (Contd) Engine Unloading: The Engine Unloading Feature modifies the Under Frequency Curve. This feature unloads the engine/prime mover at a rate greater than the Volts/Hz Curve. This feature becomes active upon a sudden speed drop of the engine/prime mover. The purpose of this feature is to allow the engine/prime mover to recover from sudden block load application if needed.

Ref: IOM, Page 22

26

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Operating Features (Contd) Engine Unloading (Contd): There are (4) adjustment parameters for this feature: Unloading Activation Frequency--The frequency below which Engine Unloading Feature activates. Unloading Activation Rate--The rate of speed drop required to activate the Engine Unloading Feature Unloading Droop Percentage--The percentage of generator voltage by which the output is reduced upon activation of the Engine Unloading Feature Unloading Droop TimeThe duration of the unloading event before going back to the under-frequency operation NOTE: This features adjustments may only be made through the MARATHON-DVR2000E-COMS Communication Software. It cannot be made by Front Panel Adjustment.
Ref: IOM, Page 22 27

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Operating Features (Contd) Generator Soft Start.:
Both model DVR2000E and DVR2000EC regulators incorporate an adjustable soft start feature that will control the time for the generator voltage to ramp up to the regulation set point. The ramp rate is adjustable from 2 to 120 seconds through the communication software This adjustment cannot be made through the Front Panel Adjustment. Factory default setting is 3 seconds. NOTE: The Underfrequency Feature is also active during soft start, and takes priority in control of the generator voltage. What this means is that regardless of the ramp-up setting, the generator voltage will never ramp-up faster than the engine/prime mover and will accelerate up to the under-frequency corner frequency during initial start up.
Ref: IOM, Page 24 28

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Operating Features (Contd) Analog Adjust :

Both model DVR2000E and DVR2000EC voltage regulators incorporate an analog auxiliary adjust feature that will allow adjustment of the voltage regulation set point by the application of a positive or negative DC voltage across terminals A and B. Voltage up to +/-3Vdc may be applied at this input
The circuit induces a 1,000 burden on the DC source NOTE 1: The application of a +3 Vdc signal corresponds to a +30% change in the voltage regulation set point. NOTE 2: If the DC voltage is removed from the analog (Auxiliary) input, the operating voltage regulation set point will return to the original set point value.

- Protective Features/Functions -

The DVR2000E/EC voltage regulators have (6) built-in protective functions. Each function, except the Crowbar Shutdown, has a corresponding front panel LED that will blink rapidly when that function is activated. The following (2) slides define each indication.

NOTE: Each function, except Crowbar Shutdown, is also announced through the MARATHONDVR2000E-COMS Communication Software.

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) Definition: Latch-Off. Latch-off is the term used to describe the DC output shut down of a DVR2000EC/EC initiated by one of the protective features which, when activated, will inhibit DC output to the exciter field. Once the AVR DC output has been deactivated by the Latch-Off Function, the Latch-Off Circuit will not reset until the input voltage to the AVR has been removed for 10 seconds or more.

NOTE: After the regulator has been re-powered, the function indicator LED on the front panel will flash rapidly for 5 seconds to indicate shutdown mode prior to activating regulation. This is very useful in troubleshooting why the regulator is shutting down.

33

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) -

1. Overexcitation Shutdown. 2. Generator Over Voltage Shutdown. 3. DVR2000E/EC Over Temperature Shutdown. 4. Loss Of Sensing Voltage Shutdown. 5. Overexcitation Limiting (Exciter Field Current). 6. Crowbar Shutdown.

34

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 1. Over Excitation Shutdown (Field Voltage) <LED #12> When activated, the overexcitation feature will latch-off the regulator after the DC excitation voltage set point (80 Vdc default) is exceeded for 15 seconds. This rather long time delay prior to activating provides for shorter time periods of high field forcing voltage which may be required for short circuit clearance, and/or electric motor starting.

NOTE: The time delay for this function is 15 seconds. All of the rest of the DVR2000E/EC regulator protective functions will latch off the regulator much quicker than 15 seconds; therefore, if the Over Excitation LED #12 is blinking rapidly, the most probable cause of failure is an open in the exciter field (stator) circuit.
Ref: IOM, Page 23 35

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 2. Generator Over Voltage Shutdown <LED #1> The DVR2000E/EC regulator monitors the generators sensed output voltage. If the sensed voltage exceeds the Over-Voltage SetPoint (a percent of the preset sensing voltage) for 0.75 seconds, the regulator will latch-off and the Over-Voltage LED #1 on the front panel will blink rapidly. Note that the factory default over-voltage set point is 120% of the preset system voltage. NOTE: The factory default over-voltage set point of 120% may be modified from 105% to 120% in even integers only by use of the communication software package. This features adjustments may only be made through the MARATHON-DVR2000E-COMS Communication Software. It cannot be made by Front Panel Adjustment.
Ref: IOM, Page 23 36

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 3. DVR2000E/EC Over Temperature Shutdown <LED #11> A temperature sensor within the DVR2000E/EC regulator continually monitors the temperature of the device. If the temperature of the device exceeds 70C (158F), the regulator will latch off, and the Over Temperature LED #11 on the front panel will blink rapidly.

NOTE: The Over Temperature Shut-Down is activated by a sensed over temperature in the regulator only. It does not monitor the parent generator temperature.

Ref: IOM, Page 23

37

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 4. Loss Of Sensing Voltage Shutdown <LED #2> The DVR2000E/EC monitors the sensed generator voltage, and latches-off the regulator if a loss of sensing voltage is detected. When activated, the Loss of Sensing LED #2 will blink rapidly. For 1-Phase sensing, a sensed voltage of less than 50% of set voltage is interpreted as a loss of sensing. For 3-Phase sensing, the total loss of a sensed phase, or an imbalance between phases of more than 20% is interpreted as a loss of sensing. When sensing input continuity is not lost, an adjustable time delay (available only through the software, and not the front panel) of 0 to 25 seconds is present when a loss of sensing condition is detected. If sensing input continuity is lost, the time delay is deactivated, and the regulator will latch-off immediately.
Ref: IOM, Page 23 38

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 5. If - Limiting (Exciter Field Current) <LED #4> The DVR2000E/EC has a field current factory default of 6.15 amperes for 10 seconds. The current limit is adjustable from 0 to 6.5 amperes, and the time delay is adjustable from 0 to 10 seconds. These adjustments can only be made through the communications software, and not from the front panel. When the over excitation limit is exceeded, the If - Limit LED #12 on the front panel will blink rapidly. When the time delay expires, the regulator will latch-off.

39

DVR2000E/EC Overview
- Protective Features/Functions (Contd) 6. Crowbar Shutdown Circuit The Crowbar Shutdown Circuit protects the generator rotor from over-current damage resulting from a shorted power switch internal to the DVR2000E/EC voltage regulator. During operation, if the field current exceeds the set point and the power stage receives no gating pulse for 1.5 seconds, the Crowbar Circuit activates, and places a short circuit across the regulator input power terminals.

This action protects the generator by blowing the 5 Amp external

power input fuse and removing operating power from the device.
