Tentative Course Outline

Introduction to normal and shear stresses and strains; stress strain diagram of common materials, modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, Poissons ratio. Calculation of normal and direct shear stresses in machine components. Properties of area: centroid of area , area moment of inertia, polar moment of inertia and radius of gyration. Torque and Torsional shear stress. Stresses in Beams: shear force and bending moment diagrams; determination of flexural stress and transverse shear stress in bea

Tentative Course Outline

Combined stresses and deflection of beam. Failure prediction for static loading: Stress concentration, uniaxial and multiaxial stress state. Failure prediction for cyclic and impact loading. Cyclic stresses, fatigue strength of material, endurance limit modification factors, Soderberg line, Goodman line and Gerber line. Linear impact stresses and deformation

Tentative Course Outline

Design of shafts, keys and splins Design of columns Design of threaded fasteners and power screws Design of helical springs and leaf springs Introduction of rolling bearing nomenclature.

Equivalent load calculations for selecting rolling bearings

Tentative Course Outline

Design of flat and V-belts. Design of wire ropes and rolling chains Introduction to gear nomenclature and different gears. Design of spur gear Introduction to different types of brakes and clutches. Concept of self-energizing and denergizing shoe.

Course Objectives
Introduce students to the concepts of stress and strength Introduce students to standard specifications in the design process

Familiarize students to the effects of forces and torques on elastic bodies

Expose students to the fundamental theories of machine design Introduce students to the design of commonly used machine components for mechatronics systems

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students should be able to: Identify different components of machines and their loads Calculate stresses on machine components under static and dynamic loads Design machine components on the basis of strength of material and deflection limitations Apply standard specifications in the design process
