“We look simply to see, see others looking, see
we are seen looking, and soon become
knowing and skilled in regard to the evidential
uses made of the appearance of looking.”

Erving Goffman, Forms of Talk

2
LinkedNow.com
• LinkedNow is “real reviews, real employees”
• Using “employee generated reviews,” LinkedNow also
– generates traffic to reviews through people
– and traffic to people through reviews
• Reviews build a ‘virtual’ profile for the user so that
users can engage with reviews or with each other

3
LinkedNow.com
• LinkedNow has a goal to become the best social
networking platform for working professionals:
– help you find, review and talk about what's great -
and not so great - about your current and past
employers
– enable best ways of looking for a new job online
including browsing unbiased company reviews.

4
LinkedNow.com Value Proposition
“Why not just email friends or ask them in person?”

• We offer an easy and fun way for real professionals to

share opinions and reviews on the companies
they worked for.
– By fostering a vibrant community of job seekers and
professionals who feel connected both on LinkedNow
and, in the real business world.
• We allow you to search quickly unbiased reviews and
ratings of employers.
• LinkedNow ranking algorithm uses a proprietary system
called CompanyRank to help classify employers.

5
LinkedNow.com CompanyRank
• CompanyRank algorithm computes a recursive score for
employers, based on the weighted sum of the
CompanyRank of the employers that are related.

• Each company is rated based on

7 criteria such as Trust in senior
leadership, Job security, Career
growth and 4 others that we
found vital to gauging the
company’s competitiveness as an
employer.

6
LinkedNow.com Private Beta
• Reviews build a profile for the user so that users can
engage with reviews or with each other
• Users give each other compliments
– directed either at the person
– at their reviews
– at their style

Richness
• And because communication solicits response, a
compliment given is often a compliment returned

LinkedNow.com
• being friendly pays off
• people are the content
• compliments are a perfect ice breaker
• and though we give them to each other, they’re given
in public
• they add to our credibility and popularity
• and make the site more active
• which adds up to traffic and participation!
• however....

18
LinkedNow.com
• With its economy of reciprocity around the exchange
of compliments
• Many of LinkedNow users are motivated to review
more and to interact more
• With the result that LinkedNow reviews will be often
subjective, and story-like
• Thus giving users personality through reviews that
serve as their profiles

19
LinkedNow.com Technology
• You might be wondering what LinkedNow is made of.
The short version: it's AJAX served up by Apache,
Jboss (Tomcat), Java 5, with Struts2 as operational
glue, all running and developed (mostly) on Linux.
• We use MySQL when we store company reviews.
• We use memcached to keep the database from getting
crushed.

“By an extension of meaning, ‘stroking’ may be

employed colloquially to denote any act implying
recognition of another’s presence. Hence a stroke may
be used as the fundamental unit of social action. An
exchange of strokes constitutes a transaction, which is
the unit of social intercourse.”

Eric Berne, Games People Play
