Third World Cinema Tsotsi

BY LOUISE LAWS

The word Tsotsi means thug in African. So by looking at these screen shots, you can see the links with thugs and gangs.

Plot
In Johannesburg, a small time criminal, Tsotsi, is a teenager without feelings, hardened by his tough life. After a series of violent gang hits, Tsotsi hijacks a car. However, whilst driving, Tsotsi finds that there is a baby on the back seat. He brings the baby to his house in the slum. The next six days bring about a change in him that couldn't be foreseen. Although the film ends ambiguously, two unused endings were shot for the film, which can be seen on the Tsotsi DVD. In one, Tsotsi is shot in the shoulder, and while the officers are shocked at what happened, he escapes through a large field back to the Soweto slums after avoiding another shot from the chief police officer. In the other, Tsotsi is shot in the chest while reaching for the baby's milk. He collapses and dies while John and Pumla look on in horror.

Difference between a third world film, Hollywood films and British films
Comparing third world films and Hollywood films: Third world films are completely different to Hollywood films. A third world film shows what uis going on in other countries We dont recognise about what they struggle through on an everyday bases. Also, the actors that they use arent well known or un-known directors, this then woks out to be a lot cheaper. In a Hollywood film they have well known actors and directors to make the films bigger and people will want to see their films. But normally, the plots and storylines are made up, which makes them more interesting. Comparing third world films and British films: British Indie films and third world films are both nearly the same as each other. But they both show the same type of genres; crime, gangs, social issues and realism. They are also low budgeted. But in some ways, they are both different from each other. For instants, third world films focus on suffering in other countries. Where as British indie films focus on the country they live in , but focus on the gangs, violence and money troubles.
