PRODUCTION INFORMATION SYSTEM

Manufacturing or Production information system provides information on production / operation activities of an organization and thus facilitates the decision making process of production managers.

Manufacturing information system

MIS support the production/operations function that includes all activities concerned with the planning and control of the processes producing goods or services. In this presentation, we concentrate on computer-based manufacturing applications to illustrate information systems that support the production/ operations function.

Production information system are depicted as fallows:

Production data Inventory data Supplier data Work force data Environment data Organizational plans

Processing

Product design Plant layout and plant location Production planning & control Quality control

Production data
Inventory data

Production data includes production orders, assembly orders, finished items, scraps etc.

Inventory data includes data on inventories of raw materials goods in process and finished goods.

Supplier data

Supplier data provides information about the sources of raw materials.

Work force data

Work force data includes data about the labour market, performance of workers etc. this type of data is essential for production scheduling and plant utilisation .

Environment data

Environment data includes data on technology trends, raw material , prices, labour forces economics and dynamics. This helps the production manager in better planning and control of activities of production processes.ss

MIS gathers different types of data from various sources, processes the data to transformation it into meaningful information which is provided to the production manager to facilitate decision making at various levels of management.s

Computer- Integrated Manufacturing

The overall goal of CIM and such manufacturing information system is to create flexible, agile, manufacturing processes that efficiently produce product of the highest quality. Thus , CIM supports concepts of flexible manufacturing systems, agile manufacturing, and total quality management. Implementing such manufacturing concepts enables a company to respond to and fulfill customer requirements quickly with high-quality products and services.
