POSITIONAL TOLERANCING

The location features are shown by coord. Dimensions/polar & angular dimensions. The dimensions are commonly known as true dimensions and represents only basic sizes. Dimensions enclosed in a rectangular frame indicate exact value. Permissible deviations from true position are indicated by positional tolerance. PT may be specified in MMC, RFS. MEASURING PRINCIPLE

(A B) (a + b) / a
A = Indicator reading in upper position, B = Indicator reading in lower position a = Length of hole = distance between indicator positions b = Distance between lower indicator position and top of part

POSITION TOLERANCING ON MMC BASIS

The MMC symbol m is added in the feature control symbol immediately after the tolerance

If the hole is at MMC the position of its axis with in the circular zone of diameter equal to PT. If the hole is at LMC the diameter of the tolerance zone is increased by

an amount of feature tolerance zone.

Greatest deviation from true position in one direction = (H + P)/2 H= Hole tolerance

PREFERRED METHODS
POSITIONAL TOLERANCING ON AN MMC BASIS - Functional Gauges can be used - Larger variations in position are permitted when diameter departs from MMC. COORDINATE TOLERANCING METHOD - More economical when the production quantities are small preferred when functional gauges are not economical. - The tolerance zone is restricted to rectangular.

POSITIONAL TOLERANCING ON AN RFS BASIS

Similar to coordinate tolerancing method except the zone is circular.
