Categorizing Biometric Applications

Applications divided into three categories

In which biometrics provide logical access to data or information In which biometrics provide physical access to tangible materials or to controlled areas In which biometrics identify or verify the identity of an individual from the database or token

Apllication specific factors

In what manner does the individual interact with the biometric system? Is the user supervised? Does the user claim an identity before interacting with the system? What are the applications requirement for accuracy, enrollment and response time Is the user motivated to comply with the biometric system? What is the value of the data or materials that the biometric is protecting? With what non biometric technologies do biometrics compete?

Seven Horizontal Classification

Criminal identification 1.To identify and verify the identity of a suspect or individual in a law enforcement application 2.Primary role of biometric is to identify an individual in order to proceed law enforcement process

Retail/ATM/point of sale 1.To identify or verify the identity of individuals conducting in-person transactions for goods or services 2.Primary goal of biometric is to complement or replace authentication mechanisms such as presenting cards and photo identification , entering a pin or signing ones name

E-Commerce/telephony 1.To identify or verify the identity of individuals conducting remote transactions for goods or services 2.Primary goal of biometric is to replace authentication mechanisms 3.Biometrics are used to authorize various types of transactions

PC/Network Access 1.To identify or verify the identity of individual accessing PCs , networks , applications and other PC resources 2.Primary goal of biometric is to replace authentication mechanisms(passwords/tokens) 3.Biometric is used to grant access to resource

Physical access/time and attendance 1.To identify or verify the identity of individuals entering or leaving an area at a given time 2.Primary goal of biometric is to replace authentication mechanisms(keys/tokens)

Citizen Identification 1.To identify or verify the identity of individuals in their interaction with government agencies for the purposes of card issurance , voting , immigration 2.Primary goal of biometric is to replace authentication mechanisms(signatures, document provision) 3.Biometric is used to prevent duplicate registration for a public benefit or

Surveillance 1.To identify or verify the identity of individual present in a given space or area. 2.Primary goal of biometric is to replace authentication mechanisms(manual monitoring of cameras) 3.Doesnot require user compliance.

Capacities in which individuals use biometric systems

Primary roles an individual can occupy 1.Employee 2.Citizen 3.Consumer Employee authentication refers to authentication of an individual during course of employment, in which user provide biometric data to access information

Citizen authentication refers to authentication of an individual by a government body for purposes of law enforcement, obtaining drivers licence , voter ID Consumer authentication refers to authentication of an individual in the course of executing a transaction for goods or services
