OUTCOMES BASED EDUCATION

Outcomes based education is a process that involves the restructuring of curriculum, assessment and reporting practices in education to reflect the achievement of higher order learning and mastery rather than the accumulation of course credits.

Thus, the primary aim of OBE is to facilitate desired changes within the learners, by increasing knowledge, developing skills, and positively influencing attitudes, values and judgment.

OBE embodies the idea that the best way to learn is to first determine what needs to be achieved. Once the end goal (Product or Outcome) has been determined, the strategies, processes, techniques, and other ways or means can be put into place to achieve the goal.

Outcomes are clear learning results that learners have to demonstrate at the end of significant learning experiences: What the learners can actually DO with what they KNOW and have LEARNED.

OUTCOMES are actions/performances that embody and reflect learners Competence in using CONTENT, INFORMATION, IDEAS, and TOOLS successfully.

Learning outcomes are statements that specify what learners will know and able to do as a result of a learning activity. Outcomes are more precise, specific and measurable than goals.

1. Specify the level, criterion, or standard for the knowledge, skill, ability, or disposition that the learners must demonstrate. 2. Include conditions under which they should be able to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, abilities or dispositions. 3. Contain active verbs.

4. It is measurable 5. The outcome can be measured by more than one assessment method. 6. Do not join elements in one outcome statement that can not be assessed by a single method.
Example: Customers will be highly satisfied with the service and requests for service will increase.(Measure

satisfaction separately from the number of request for service)

a. Cognitive: What do you want your students to know? b. Affective: What do you want your students to think or care about? c. Psychomotor: What do you want your students to be able to do?
