Introduction

How did the EU Begin ?

Origin from European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and European Economic Community (EEC), 1951 and 1958 Formed by : Inner Six countries - France,
Netherlands, West Germany , Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg

Goal : A united, peaceful Europe which would make war between its countries impossible. Purpose : 1) To pave the way for greater European cohesion 2) To contribute to the raising of the standard of living in the Member States and to the development of relations with the other countries

The Name of European Union

The Maastricht Treaty established EU Name in 1993. The latest major amendment to the constitutional basis of the EU, the Treaty of Lisbon, came into force in 2009. Currently , EU has 27 member states. Croatia Expected to 28th on 1 July 2013

What is the purpose of the EU?


The Union shall set itself the following objectives: To promote economic and social progress To assert the identity of the European Union on the international scene To introduce European citizenship To develop an area of freedom, security, and justice To maintain and build on established EU law.

Background
France and Germany continue to violate limit of Europes common urban pollutants and nitrogen oxides, however their obligation is to clean up the air Exempt dozens of coal-fired energy stations from the EUs pollution regulations for large combustion plants allowing the heavy polluters to continue operating at least until the end of 2015

Research
Breaches of pollution laws and their costly effects on healthcare and human lifespan bad air causes as many as 500,000 premature deaths per year in the EU 0.1% of the blocs population. EUs coal-fired power plants, which provide 20% of the blocs electricity, slightly less than nuclear
