A Study on the Effectiveness of Health and Safety Measures Implemented by HMT Ltd.

INTRODUCTION
Due to rapid industrialization, industrial workers are exposed to several types of hazards and accidents. Every year lakh of workers are injured due to mechanical, chemical, electrical and radiation hazards and it leads to partial or total disablement. So in recent years, greater attention is given to health and safety due to pressure from government, trade unions, labor laws and awareness of employers. The efficiency of workers depend to a great extends on the environment in which they work. Work environment consist of all the factors, which act and react on the body and mind of an employee. The primary aim is to create an environment, which ensures the greatest ease of work and removes all causes of worries.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
The machine tools industry in Indian dates back to the Second World War. Due to the non-availability of imported machine tools, a few British owned general engineering firms took up their manufacturing in India. This was followed by upstart of industrialization in the series off five year plans. The process off planning in the economy resulted in a second phase of machine tools with public sector investment in Machine Tools (HMT Ltd.) 1953.

COMPANY PROFILE
HINDUSTAN MACHINE TOOLS Ltd.
ESTABLISHMENT : Bangalore In collaboration with M/S Oerlikon of Switzerland in 1953. CAPACITY TO MANUFACTURE : Around 400 machines per year. The growth of HMT Ltd. was characterized by forward and backward integration of technology and product diversification. The company started with manufacturing and selling lathes expanded its machine tools product range to evolve as the ultimate solution in metal cutting. The product diversification efforts took the company to the business of watches on 1976, food processing machinery in 1980 CNC system in 1986 and reconditioning in 1990. The multi product activities made HMT Ltd. changes its identity as Hindustan Machine Tools Limited.

Today HMT Ltd has 16 manufacturing units with 22 product divisions, spread through length and breadth of India subsidiary via, HMT (international) Ltd. It also exports for several other Indian companies. HMT Ltd was restructured in 1992 to facilitates better administration of multi product business group was established.

NEED FOR STUDY


Health and safety measures are inevitable to any organization where workers are involved. Its an organizations responsibility to provide to its workers beyond the payment of wages for their services. The workers health and safety on and off the job within the organization is a vital concern of the employee.

The working environment in a factory adversely a which leads to accident or injury or disablement or loss of life to the workers. It effects the workers health and safety because of the excessive heat or cold, noise, odors, fumes, dust and lack of sanitation and pure air etc.
A health and safer environment is a pre-requisite for any productive effort. These must be held in check by providing regular health check-up, protective devices and compensatory benefits to the workers.

OBJECTIVES
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
A study of effectiveness of health and safety measures implemented by HMT Ltd, Kalamassery.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE:
To identify the health and safety problems in HMT Ltd. To study the awareness among employees about health and safety in their workplace. Perspective of workers about the effectiveness of health and safety measures implemented in the company.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research is the systematic and objective search for the analysis of information relevant to the identification and solution of the specific problem. Research is science and a systematic search for information on a particular topic .In fact research is an act of scientific investigation. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT Data relevant for the project is collected through questionnaire. The questionnaire is structured one containing a list of questions. RESEARCH PERIOD Research period is the time taken for data collection. The research period of this study is conducted from 17th May 2013 to 4th July 2013. SAMPLING UNITS The sampling unit consists of employees of low grade in HMT Ltd.

SAMPLE SIZE: The sample size for the given project is

125.
SAMPLING METHOD : Convenient sampling method is

used to collect data from the respondents.

DATA COLLECTION
Primary Data Collection
The present study used primary data by conducting a survey among the workers of HMT Ltd using questionnaire. The data collected have analyzed and interpreted using appropriate statistical tools.

Secondary Data Collection


Secondary data consist of information that already exists somewhere and have been collected for specific purpose in the study. The secondary data for this study are newspapers, internet etc journals, magazines published by the company.

LIMITATIONS
The major limitation was the time constraint. Another limitation involves the biases that can come in to play as a result of survey respondents who attempts to convey a favorable impression of their firm. Some of the workers are not well educated. So it was difficult to convey.

Another limitation is due to the shift of the employee data collection was difficult.

FINDINGS
62% are satisfied with their job and 38% are dissatisfied. 54% are aware of the health and safety measures adopted in the company. 34% had very good opinion about the health and safety matter in the organization and 13 % felt poor. 63.44% are satisfied with the remedial measures taken during the accident and 36.56% were dissatisfied. 45% said that they are provided with Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) and 36% said they are not. 65% said that they the medical facilities are excellent and 22% said that they are good. 55% of the employees were satisfied with the training given to them before handling machines and 35% are not. 64% agree that accidents are mainly caused due to the negligence of the employee and 23% say that it is because of lack of training. 60% of the employees said that food and hygiene facility was excellent and 36% said that it is good.

SUGGESTION
On the job training programs must be implemented in the company. A very few people are satisfied with the health and safety measures more workshops can be adopted. Employees must be provided with enough of PPEs. Frequent inspections must be done. Company should make sure that the employees use safe tools and equipments and they are properly maintained.

CONCLUSION
It is very essential that the management should maintain good relationship with workers, and include the workers in the decision making. Provide the job for the employees, who lost the job due to the accident. Increase the number of latrines and urinals, and maintain cleanliness. Safety committee is formed in the company, but it didnt work properly, so it is the duty of management to reform the safety comities and make it very active.
