Foreclosure
Have not experienced an identity crisis but who are firmly committed to an occupation and an ideology (Schultz & Schultz, 2009, p. 225).
Michael was focused on his career during his adolescent years. Peter Sharp describes Michael as anxious-avoidant', which means they will often take on what they know they can be successful in, therefore avoid challenges outside their comfort zones and may try to provide their worth by excelling and over-excelling in one particular area. (BBC News UK, 2009).
Foreclosure (cont)
These commitments were determined by their parents.
Jackson acknowledged that his father hurt him when he was a child, but was nonetheless a "genius", as he admitted his father's strict discipline played a huge role in his success (Living with Michael Jackson, 2003).
Foreclosure (cont)
Tend to be rigid and authoritarian and have difficulty coping with change (Marcia, as cited in Schultz & Schultz, 2009, p. 225).
Michael have expressed that he had difficulty adapting to changes of puberty: voice change, fat nose, acne, weight, etc. It did not help that his father teased and beat him even as a child. Michael was pressured to stay as the young, successful child star that he was (Michael Jackson Talks to... Oprah Live, 1993). It was a very, very, very difficult time. Because I think every child star suffers through this period because youre not the cute and charming child that you were and you start to grow. And they (the public) want to keep you young forever (during Oprah interview).
Foreclosure (cont)
A study by Stephen, Fraser and Marcia found that students that are categorized in foreclosure tend to be achievementoriented and focus their energy toward external rather than internal goals (as cited in Schultz & Schultz, 2009, p. 225).
