Live by the Word

(ESV)
May 1
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning
together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only
the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of
the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption
as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope
we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For
who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we
do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the
Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know
what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself
intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
- Romans 8:22-26
May 2
With patience a ruler may be persuaded,
and a soft tongue will break a bone.

- Proverbs 25:15
May 3
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the
coming of the Lord. See how the farmer
waits for the precious fruit of the earth,
being patient about it, until it receives the
early and the late rains. You also, be
patient. Establish your hearts, for the
coming of the Lord is at hand.
- James 5:7-8
May 4
Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so
that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is
standing at the door. As an example of suffering
and patience, brothers, take the prophets who
spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we
consider those blessed who remained steadfast.
You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and
you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the
Lord is compassionate and merciful.
- James 5:9-11
May 5
But above all, my brothers, do not swear,
either by heaven or by earth or by any
other oath, but let your "yes" be yes and
your "no" be no, so that you may not fall
under condemnation.

- James 5:12
May 6
And we desire each one of you to show the
same earnestness to have the full
assurance of hope until the end, so that
you may not be sluggish, but imitators of
those who through faith and patience
inherit the promises.

- Hebrews 6:11-12
May 7
He will render to each one according to his
works: to those who by patience in well-
doing seek for glory and honor and
immortality, he will give eternal life; but for
those who are self-seeking and do not
obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
there will be wrath and fury.
- Romans 2:6-8
May 8
I charge you in the presence of God and of
Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and
the dead, and by his appearing and his
kingdom: preach the word; be ready in
season and out of season; reprove,
rebuke, and exhort, with complete
patience and teaching.
- 2 Timothy 4:1-2
May 9
And as for what fell among the thorns, they
are those who hear, but as they go on
their way they are choked by the cares
and riches and pleasures of life, and their
fruit does not mature. As for that in the
good soil, they are those who, hearing the
word, hold it fast in an honest and good
heart, and bear fruit with patience.
- Luke 8:14-15
May 10
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full
acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners, of whom I am the
foremost. But I received mercy for this reason,
that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might
display his perfect patience as an example to
those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only
God, be honor and glory forever and ever.
Amen.
- 1 Timothy 1:15-17
May 11
May you be strengthened with all power,
according to his glorious might, for all
endurance and patience with joy, giving
thanks to the Father, who has qualified
you to share in the inheritance of the
saints in light.

- Colossians 1:11-12
May 12
You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For
who can resist his will?" But who are you, O man, to
answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its
molder, "Why have you made me like this?" Has the
potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same
lump one vessel for honorable use and another for
dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his
wrath and to make known his power, has endured with
much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels
of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory—
even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but
also from the Gentiles?
- Romans 9:19-24
May 13
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be
constant in prayer.

- Romans 12:12
May 14
And we urge you, brothers, admonish the
idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the
weak, be patient with them all.

- 1 Thessalonians 5:14
May 15
Because you have kept my word about
patient endurance, I will keep you from the
hour of trial that is coming on the whole
world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
I am coming soon. Hold fast what you
have, so that no one may seize your
crown.
- Revelation 3:10-11
May 16
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as
some count slowness, but is patient
toward you, not wishing that any should
perish, but that all should reach
repentance.

- 2 Peter 3:9
May 17
"To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of
him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who
walks among the seven golden lampstands. "'I know
your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and
how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have
tested those who call themselves apostles and are not,
and found them to be false. I know you are enduring
patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you
have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that
you have abandoned the love you had at first.
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent,
and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you
and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you
repent.
- Revelation 2:1-5
May 18
Better is the end of a thing than its
beginning,
and the patient in spirit is better than the
proud in spirit.
Be not quick in your spirit to become
angry,
for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

- Ecclesiastes 7:8-9
May 19
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in
his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
For the evildoers shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit
the land.
- Psalm 37:7-9
May 20
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.

- Psalm 40:1
May 21
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who
comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to
comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort
with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as
we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through
Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are
afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are
comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience
when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we
suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that
as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our
comfort.
- 2 Corinthians 1:3-7
May 22
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome
but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently
enduring evil, correcting his opponent with
gentleness. God may perhaps grant them
repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,
and they may come to their senses and escape
from the snare of the devil, after being captured
by him to do his will.
- 2 Timothy 2:24-26
May 23
For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had
no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,
saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And
thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the
promise. For people swear by something greater than
themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for
confirmation. So when God desired to show more
convincingly to the heirs of the promise the
unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it
with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in
which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for
refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to
the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and
steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the
inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as
a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest
forever after the order of Melchizedek.
- Hebrews 6:13-20
May 24
Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
I am weary with my crying out;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.
- Psalm 69:1-3
May 25
They lift up their voices, they sing for joy;
over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the
west.
Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD;
in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of
the LORD, the God of Israel.
From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise,
of glory to the Righteous One.
But I say, "I waste away,
I waste away. Woe is me!
For the traitors have betrayed,
with betrayal the traitors have betrayed."
- Isaiah 24:14-16
May 26
A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,
but he who is slow to anger quiets
contention.

- Proverbs 15:18
May 27
The steadfast love of the LORD never
ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
"The LORD is my portion," says my soul,
"therefore I will hope in him.“
- Lamentations 3:22-24
May 28
The LORD is good to those who wait for
him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good for a man that he bear
the yoke in his youth.
- Lamentations 3:25-27
May 29
So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley
of Gerar and settled there. And Isaac dug again the
wells of water that had been dug in the days of
Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped
after the death of Abraham. And he gave them the
names that his father had given them. But when
Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a
well of spring water, the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled
with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So
he called the name of the well Esek, because they
contended with him. Then they dug another well, and
they quarreled over that also, so he called its name
Sitnah. And he moved from there and dug another
well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its
name Rehoboth, saying, "For now the LORD has
made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.“
- Genesis 26:17-22
May 30
And he said, "Naked I came from my
mother’s womb, and naked shall I return.
The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken
away; blessed be the name of the LORD.“

Job 1:21
May 31
Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name
was Simeon, and this man was righteous and
devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and
the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been
revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would
not see death before he had seen the Lord’s
Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple,
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus,
to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
he took him up in his arms and blessed God…
