My Muscular System

My muscles move my body like strings move a puppet.

The muscular system is made up of

muscles and tendons

How many muscles do I have?

I have about 650

muscles in my body.
My muscles make up

half of my body weight.

??? How much do your

muscles weigh?

My muscles are important because they

Hold my organs in place

Hold my bones together

so that I can move Help me chew my food Open and close my eyelids Pump my blood Allow me to run and play Help me to smile!

Did you know?????

It takes more muscles to frown than to smile?

Function of Muscles
Produce movement
Maintain posture Stabilize joints

Generate heat

What are muscles made of?

Stretchy, elastic cells and fibers

Muscle cells are

elongated (muscle cell = muscle fiber) What else is stretchy like a muscle?

Why do I need tendons?

Tendons attach my muscles to my bone helping my body move. Feel your tendon right above your heel in the back of your leg.

This is the thickest tendon in your body.

It is called the

Achilles tendon and connects the heel bone to the calf muscle in your leg.

One way to keep my muscles strong

Eat foods from

the meat group every day. They are high in protein which helps to build strong muscles.
Name some foods that are high in protein.

Another way to keep strong muscles

Exercise every day.
What are some things you can do every day to help keep your muscular system healthy?

Effects of Exercise on Muscle

Aerobics result in stronger muscles due to increase blood supply Muscle fibers increase mitochondria and oxygen storage Muscle becomes more fatigue resistant Heart enlarges to pump more blood to body Does not increase skeletal muscle size

Effects of Exercise on Muscle

Results of increased muscle

use from resistance training Individual muscle cells make more contractile filaments & connective tissue increases

Increase in muscle size Increase in muscle strength

Types of Muscles
Three basic muscle types are found in the body
muscle Cardiac muscle Skeletal muscle
Smooth

Smooth Muscle Characteristics

Has no striations

(stripes) Spindle-shaped cells Single nucleus Involuntary no conscious control Found mainly in the walls of hollow organs

Cardiac Muscle Characteristics

Has striations

Usually has a single

nucleus Joined to another muscle cell at an intercalated disc Involuntary Found only in the heart

Skeletal Muscle Characteristics

Cells are multinucleate

Striated (striped) have visible banding

Voluntary subject to conscious control Cells are surrounded and bundled by connective tissue

Skeletal Muscle Characteristics

Most are

attached by tendons to bones

Properties of Skeletal Muscle Activity

Irritability ability to receive and

respond to a stimulus Contractility ability to shorten when an adequate stimulus is received

Nerve Stimulus to Muscles

Skeletal muscles must

be stimulated by a nerve to contract Motor unit

One neuron (nerve cell) Muscle cells stimulated by that neuron

Muscles and Body Movements

Movement is attained

due to a muscle moving an attached bone

Muscles and Body Movements

Muscles are attached to at

least two points

Origin attachment to a moveable bone Insertion attachment to an immovable bone

Head and Neck Muscles

Trunk Muscles

Deep Trunk and Arm Muscles

Muscles of the Pelvis, Hip, and Thigh

Muscles of the Lower Leg

Superficial Muscles: Anterior

Superficial Muscles: Posterior

What did you learn?

In your notebook, write three sentences about what you learned about the muscular system.

What else is there to know about Muscles?

Energy for muscle contraction

Muscle fatigue and Oxygen debt
