What is Public Speaking?


The process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners. Purpose range from simply transmitting information, to motivating people to act, to simply telling a story. Good speakers need to change the emotions of their

listeners, not just inform them.

Types of Speeches
1. Informative Speech:

- when a person gives a speech before an audience to impart information on a particular topic or issue
- Well research on the topic - Should include all the facts but you cannot take side on a particular speech - Success of informative speech depend on how much the audience could understand from the speech

2. Persuasive Speech
- When a person tried to persuade or convince a group of people - Aim to influence and change the opinion of the audience - Difficult because facing a group of people who may have totally different views

- REMEMBER: not there to wage a war and should talk without hurting feelings

Tips to Overcome Nervousness


1. Know the room. Be familiar with the place in which you will speak. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids. 2. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience as they arrive. It's easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.

3. Know your material. Practice your speech and revise it if necessary. If you're not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase.

4. Relax. Ease tension by doing exercises. 5. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. When you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful. 6. Realize that people want you to succeed. They don't want you to fail. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining.

7. Don't apologize. If you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audience's attention to something they hadn't noticed. 8. Concentrate on the message Focus your attention away from your own anxieties, and outwardly towards your message and your audience. Your nervousness will dissipate. 9. Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking.
