forces causes secondary fluid motion which gives rise to heat exchange
When a fluid flows through a straight tube the velocity
is maximum at the tube center, zero at the tube wall and symmetrically distributed about the axis.
However when a fluid flows though a curved tube, the
Scope of Work
Helical coils are widely used in all fields of
engineering, so a thought is given to experimentally suggest the values of heat transfer coefficients, the various numbers associated with heat transfer phenomenon and suggest a fluid which gives maximum overall heat transfer coefficient.
The setup for the analysis consists of copper helical coils of inner diameter 11.10 mm and length 22Ft
The set up required a tank or vessel of internal diameter as 380mm to accommodate the helical coil along with a heating element of 1000 watt.
The work involves the analysis of results obtained for fluid like water. The work carried out for the both with and without agitation condition for all fluids.
In a helical coil, heat transfer to the coolant is studied experimentally . Water, Soap solution and starch solution are used as a bath liquids in a cylindrical vessel of 380 mm I.D.& 530 mm height without any mixing of bath liquid.
The surface temperature of helical coil at different positions and bath temperature are measured on digital temperature recorder.
Water inlet & Water outlet temperature of helical coil is measured by thermometer. The present work involves fabrication of setup for helical coil of 1.10 mm I.D. & 13.0 mm O.D.
The work involves analysis of heat transfer between different solution as bath liquid & water as helical coil liquid.

Working
1. Fill the cylindrical tank with water such that the entire
setup of helical coil immersed in liquid. 2. Adjust the heat supplied to setup by properly adjusting dimmer. Heat input should be recorded from the values of voltage and current. 3. Adjust the flow rate of water entering in helical coil in a way to maintain constant flow rate after enough heating of liquid. 4. Note down the various thermocouple reading with the help of temperature indicator at steady state. 5. Carry out the experimentation for the various values of heat input and by changing the mass flow rate.
Cylindrical Tank:
The criteria for selection of cylindrical tank should be such that, the helical coil arrangement, the heater and stirrer for agitation must accommodate in it.
Dimmer stat:
It is selected to fulfill the requirement of varying heat input to analyze the performance of heat transfer between water & various solution
Stirrer :
For proper mixing of various solution & to increase the turbulence
Heating Coil :
A 1000 watt drum heating coil is used to heat the bath solution in the tank.
Conclusion: . 1) Heat transfer rate in a helical coil is greater than a straight tube due to curvature ratio and secondary flow formation. 2) Here in most of the literature considered, water as the basic liquid and other liquids like glycerol of different concentration, ethylene glycol etc. either flowing or stationary fluid.
3) Thermo physical properties of the water should be taken at average inlet and outlet temperature of water.
The experimental work carried for the convective heat transfer analysis in a helical coil, can be further studied by emphasizing on the effect of number of turn of coils, curvature ratio and by circulating the surrounding fluid over the coil.
4) The condition required for the experimental work to be carried out, mostly matches with the work of Mori and Nakayama. In this dissertation work most emphasis is given on the equation presented by Mori & Nakayama.
5) In most of the literature effect of agitation and increase heat input is not considered which is the scope for further work.
