Money plays a very
important role in our
everyday life. Our parents
work very hard to earn
money. With this money,
they are able to send us
to school, buy food,
clothes, books and other
important things.
WHAT YOU LEARN ON THIS CHAPTER?

In this chapter, you will

learn about money
(ringgit and sen)
sen and
how to do addition,
subtraction, multiplication
and division involving
money.
MONEY UP TO RM10000
 Every country has its own money or
currency. In Malaysia, our currency is
known as ringgit(RM) and sen. The notes
are in RM1, RM2, RM5, RM10, RM50 and
RM100. The coins are in 1 sen, 5 sen, 10
sen, 20 sen and 50 sen.

1 When we write the value of money using

symbols, we separate the ringgit and sen by a
point.
Example: RM4 555.50
ringgit sen
2 The sen must always be represented by two
digit.
Example: RM865.25

Write RM4560.90 in words.
Answer : Four thousand five hundred sixty ringgit and
ninety sen

Example 2
Write nine thousand eight hundred ninety
Nine ringgit and twenty five sen in numerals.
Answer : RM 9899.25

Write the following amount of money in words and symbols.

Answer : Six hundred fifty two ringgit and twenty sen

Adding money is similar to adding numbers. It can be

carried out in the vertical form.

Example 4
Add RM373 and RM4 683.50.
Solution:
RM 373.00 Add 2 zeros

+ RM4 683.50

Answer : RM5 056.50
 ADD MONEY UP TO RM10000

Example 5
Calculate the total of RM53.60, RM8 023 and
RM1 600.40.
Solution:
RM 53.60
RM8 023.00 Add 2 zeros

+ RM1 600.40
RM9 677.00 Arrange the

Answer : RM9 677.00
 SUBTRACT MONEY UP TO RM10000

Subtracting money is similar to subtracting numbers. It

can be carried out in the vertical form.

Example 6
Subtract RM927 from RM3 016.
Solution:
RM3 016
- RM 927
RM2 089

Answer : RM2 089

 SUBTRACT MONEY UP TO RM10000

Example 7
Take away RM2 958.45 from RM7825.60.
Solution:
RM7 825.60
- RM2 958.45
RM4 867.15 Arrange the
points in a
straight line
Answer : RM4 867.15
 Perform mixed operation involving addition and
subtraction involving money up to RM10000

Mixed operation can be performed on money. It is

similar to performing mixed operation on number.

Example 8
Add RM965 with RM8 039. Then, subtract RM5 003.
Solution:
RM 965 RM9 004
+ RM8 039 - RM5 003
RM9 004 RM4 001

Answer : RM4 001

 Perform mixed operation involving addition and
subtraction involving money up to RM10000

RM7 289.65 – RM3 680.15 + RM2 784.50
Solution:
RM7 289.65 RM3 609.50
- RM3 680.15 +RM2 784.50
RM3 609.50 RM6 394.00

Answer : RM6 394.00

Example a
Add RM15 and RM28.30.

The amount in ringgit

RM 15 must be written before
+ RM28.30 the point.

RM45.50 – RM43.65 + RM5.90 =

Correct method
RM45.50 RM 1.85
- RM43.65 +RM 5.90
RM 1.85 RM 7.75
Do not add first, then subtract. Calculate from the left
to the right.
