Why are foam control agents necessary in the Detergent Industry?

Detergents contain beside other raw materials:
Builder substances: e.g.Zeolite, Phosphates Bleching agents: Perborates, Percarbonates S u r f a c t a n t s : nonionic and anionic types they are important for the cleaning effect and .... they creat/cause remarkable volumes of foam.... Foam must be controlled to avoide overfoaming and guarante enough mechanical treatment of the cloths.....this means....

Which Types of Sud suppressors or Foam Control Agents are mainly used in the Detergent Industry?

Soaps:
Old established foam control agent Advantage: Cheap, dosage level: 1 - 4 % Too high levels cause problems ( > 4 %) Function depends from the water hardness (-> Ca-Soaps) Function depends from the washing temperature

Silicones:
Established, low dosage sufficient: 0,1 - 0,3 % as active matter Work undependent from the water hardness Work undependent from the temperature Can be combined with other types like soaps or paraffines Physiological friendly; eliminated by adsorption to the waste water sludge

Fluids alone work only in organic systems; For wwater based foams the Compounds are the basic products, they can be formulated to emulsions and powders or self-dispersing products.... The big challenge between activity and compatibility - the main criteria to select a defoamer: What does the customer system require in respect of compatibility, dispersibility, stability....
