After completing this topic, you will be able to: Define which files and directories on the clients to back up. Create exclude and include lists.

16

About Backup Selections

What do backup selections do? Who uses backup selections? What does not use backup selections? How are they refined?

Identify files and directories to be backed up

All clients in the policy, but all files do not have to exist for every client

User backups and user archives

Exclude and include lists

17

Creating a Backup Selections List Using the GUI (UNIX)

What? File System: /data /usr

bpplinclude
18

Creating a Backup Selections List: Folders and Files (Windows)

What? File System: c:\data c:\mydocs

bpplinclude
19

Creating a Backup Selections List: Directives (Windows)

bpplinclude
20

UNIX Client Backup Selections List Guidelines

Create a backup selections list for UNIX clients. Use one pathname per line. Use meta or wildcard characters.

GUI or bpplinclude

Maximum path length = 1,023 characters Start all pathnames with a slash (/).

*, ?, { }, and [ ]

21

Windows Client Backup Selections List Guidelines

Create a backup selections list for Windows clients. Use one pathname per line. GUI or bpplinclude

Start all pathnames with the drive letter followed by : and \.

* or ?

22

Backup Selections List Directives

Directive ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES Allow Multiple Data Streams Not enabled Enabled Description Backs up the entire client in a single stream Backs up the entire client: one stream per file system (UNIX) or logical drive (Windows) Only valid when backing up Windows 2000/XP machines Affects Windows 2003 Server systems that use the Volume Shadow Copy components, including the system state Separates the stream at each point where the NEW_STREAM directive occurs
23

System_State:\ Shadow Copy Components:\

N/A N/A

NEW_STREAM

Enabled

Exclude and Include Lists on Windows Clients

24

Exclude and Include Lists on UNIX Clients

List Location on Client
/usr/openv/netbackup/ exclude_list [.policy_name[.sched_name]] /usr/openv/netbackup/ include_list [.policy_name[.sched_name]]

Exclude List
# this is a comment /home/doe/john /home/doe/abc/ /home/*/test /*/temp core

Include List
# this is a comment /home/jdoe/test

25

Topic 4: Troubleshooting Backup Selections and Client Issues

After completing this topic, you will be able to troubleshoot common backup selections and client issues.

26

Common Client and Backup Selections Issues

Client issues

Incorrect policy type/client definition Client software not installed Client connection/access

Backup selections issues

An incorrect backup selections list None of the files in the backup selections list exist (status code 71).
