Design of Non-overflow Dam

# Following steps are followed to design a Non-

overflow Dam: Selection of Dam profile Stability analysis

A. Selection Of Dam Profile : On the basis of existing dam section of same height (if possible). In general ,

U/S taken as flat.

D/S slope taken as .9 horizontal to 1.0 vertical Base width => b = 0.748h Top width may be taken 6 to 9m

B. Stability Analysis :1.

Determination of load and their moment:-

a) Dead weight b) Water pressure c) Uplift forces d) Earthquake Pressure

e) Silt Load
f) Wave Pressure

2. Tabulation of forces and moment 3. Determination of stresses

Problem StatementDesign the non- overflow section of a gravity dam with the following data :1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. R.L. of deepest foundation level R.L. of roadway at the top of dam Maximum pond level Maximum tail water level Location of centre of drainage from u.s. face of dam Roadway width at the top Upstream face Downstream face of dam Safe bearing capacity 100m 161m 152m 123.9m 7m 6.1m vertical 0.9 h to 1 v 15 kg/cm2

10. Minimum allowable shear friction factor:under normal loading = 5.0

Under abnormal loading= 4.0

11. Maximum coefficient of sliding under normal loading 12. Horizontal seismic coefficient 13. Vertical seismic coefficient 0.75 = 0.2g = 0.1g

Solution:Case 1 Following parameter are considered :1. Reservoir full 2. No tail water 3. Uplift considered 4. Drains working 5. Horizontal earthquake acceleration upstream

6. Vertical earthquake acceleration downward

Sign convention:-

1- All clockwise moment about heel as negative.

2- All anticlockwise moment as positive.
