LUKE 14:25-35
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sistersyes, even their own lifesuch a person cannot be my disciple. 27And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

LUKE 14:25-35
28Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Wont you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30saying, This person began to build and wasnt able to finish.

LUKE 14:25-35
31Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Wont he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

LUKE 14:25-35
34Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.

The Multitudes: FALSE Expectancy (Luke 14:25-35)

When Jesus left the Pharisees house, great crowds followed Him, but He was not impressed by their enthusiasm. He knew that most of those in the crowd were not the least bit interested in spiritual things.

Some wanted only to see miracles, others heard that He fed the hungry, and a few hoped He would overthrow Rome and establish Davids promised kingdom. They were expecting the wrong things. Jesus turned to the multitude and preached a sermon that deliberately thinned out the ranks.

He made it clear that, when it comes to personal discipleship, He is more interested in quality than quantity [not a CROWD].
In the matter of saving lost souls, He wants His house to be filled (Luke 14:23); but in the matter of personal discipleship, He wants only those who are willing to pay the price.

Jesus to make a distinction between salvation and discipleship. (1) Salvation is open to all who will come by faith, while discipleship is for believers willing to pay a price. (2) Salvation means coming to the cross and trusting Jesus Christ, while discipleship means carrying the cross & following Jesus Christ.

SEEMS

Jesus wants as many sinners saved as possible (that My house may be filled), but He cautions us not to take discipleship lightly; and in the three parables He gave, He made it clear that there is a price to pay.

IF YOU WILL NOT COUNT THE COST YOU WILL COAST

To begin with, we must love

Christ

supremely, even more than we

love our own flesh and blood (Luke 14:26-27).

The word hate does not suggest positive antagonism but rather to love less (see Genesis 29:30-31; Malachi 1:2-3; and Matthew 10:37). Our love for Christ must be so strong that all other love is like hatred in comparison.

What does it mean to carry the cross? It means daily identification with Christ in

shame, suffering, and

surrender to Gods will.

It means death to self, to our own plans and ambitions, and a willingness to serve Him as He directs (John 12:23-28).

Jesus gave three parables to explain why He makes such costly demands on His followers:

(1) the man building a tower,

(2) the king fighting a war, (3) and, the salt losing its flavor.

The usual interpretation is that believers are represented by the man building the tower and the king fighting the war, and we had better count the cost before we start, lest we start and not be able to finish.

But I [warren wiersbee notes] agree with Campbell Morgan that the builder and the king represent NOT the believer but Jesus. He is the One who must count the cost, to see whether we are the kind of material He can use to build the church and battle the enemy.

Regarding discipleship: He wants no false expectancy, no illusions, no bargains.

He wants to use us as stones for building His church, soldiers for battling His enemies, and salt for bettering His world; and He is looking for quality.

YOU MUST forsake all for Him, bear shame and reproach for Him, and let your love for Him control you.

The Battleship and the Lighthouse

In the darkest part of the night, a ships captain cautiously piloted his warship through the fog-shrouded waters. With straining eyes he scanned the hazy darkness, searching for dangers lurking just out of sight. His worst fears were realized when he saw a bright light straight ahead. It appeared to be a vessel on a collision course with his ship. To avert disaster he quickly radioed the oncoming vessel. This is Captain Jeremiah Smith, his voiced crackled over the radio. Please alter your course ten degrees south! Over.

To the captains amazement, the foggy image did not move. Instead, he heard back on the radio, Captain Smith. This is Private Thomas Johnson. Please alter your course ten degrees north! Over. Appalled at the audacity of the message, the captain shouted back over the radio, Private Johnson, this is Captain Smith, and I order you to immediately alter your course ten degrees south! Over.

A second time the oncoming light did not budge. With all due respect, Captain Smith, came the privates voice again, I order you to alter your course immediately ten degrees north! Over. Angered and frustrated that this impudent sailor would endanger the lives of his men and crew, the captain growled back over the radio, Private Johnson. I can have you courtmartialed for this! For the last time, I command you on the authority of the United States government to alter your course ten degrees to the south! I am a battleship!

The privates final transmission was chilling: Captain Smith, sir. Once again with all due respect, I command you to alter your course ten degrees to the north! I am a lighthouse!

Many of us in todays world have little respect for authority. We operate as if rules can be (or should be) changed to fit our personal needs and desires.

Commercials egg us on: Have it your way. In reality, we cant always have it our way. We have to conform our lives to a higher truth, a higher authoritythe Word of God. Gods truth is like a lighthouse. Its not going to change to accommodate us. We are the ones who must change to conform our lives to what God wants for us.

Jesus is also like a lighthouse. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He will always be there for us. He is absolutely dependable. We Christians must conform our lives to his will for us. If he tells us to alter our courses, we have no choice but to obey. Thats what being a disciple is all about.

MAIN IDEA:
The Clarity of the Cost of Discipleship

Discipleship demands constant reference to the plan.

A man that lives as he likes, by impulse, by inclination, or ignobly yielding to the pressure of circumstances and saying, I could not help myself, I was carried away by the flood, or Everybody round about me is doing it, and I could not be singularwill never build anything worth living in.

It will be a born ruinif I may so say. There must be continual reference to the

plan.

Question:
WHAT'S THE PLAN?

Answer:
A commitment to the VISION of MAKING DISCIPLES.

IF YOU WERE TO BUILD, what kind of materials would you use?

IF YOU WERE TO GO TO WAR, what kind of soldiers would you want?

Campbell Morgan on the BUILDER and

KING on LUKE 14

... the builder and the king represent NOT the believer but Jesus Christ. He is the One who must count the cost to see whether we are the kind of material He can use to build the church and battle the enemy.

He cannot get the job done with halfhearted followers who will not pay the price.
>>ONLY A DIEHARD CAN DO MIGHTY EXPLOITS<< He is about to BUILD and EMBARK into something BIG AND MIGHTY here on earth.

Well He needs you and me! THE KING is recruiting KINGSMEN! THE BUILDER is calling WOMEN who understand their DESTINIES!

NOW ... LIKE JESUS, we must also LOOK FOR PEOPLE ... who are disciples!
PEOPLE who are totally committed. Thats counting the COST before LAUNCHING A CHURCH; STARTING A LIFEGROUP; HAVING A PROJECT to do.

A BUILDER counts the COST ... do we want to BUILD THE PHILIPPINES?

LETS COUNT THE COST // A KING counts the COST before going to WAR -- HE WANTS COMMITTED TRUE BLUE DISCIPLES! As we have DISCIPLES, we will have a DISCIPLINED PHILIPPINES ...]

A Koreans Message for the Filipinos

18 July 2008 written by JaeyounKim (PART 1)
Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines. Do you really think the corruption is the problem of the Philippines? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father and brother also died because of famine. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism.

40 Years ago President Park took over the government to reform Korea. He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience.

In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park. They asked to him, President, when can we be well off? That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea, and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to Korea. So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea . He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart.

As we begin an ENDEAVOR SO BIG, I do believe you WILL also be COUNTING THE COST FIRST! FOR EXAMPLE: Would you like to have a COMMITTED TRAINED PILOT manning the PLANE for a FAMILY VACATION?

WOULD YOU like to have a DEDICATED and EXCELLENT DOCTOR to operate on a friend who has a serious decease or a ROOKIE Doctor?

COST OF DISCIPLESHIP, someone wrote: it's just my realization that discipleship is not easy or hard but its impossible... only by the Grace of God can it happen ... THIS IS A GREAT DISCOVERY: "DISCIPLESHIP IS BY GRACE still".

WHEN WE SURRENDER, THINGS BECOMES EFFORTLESS ... then we allow JESUS TO TAKE CONTROL.
