Objectives

Understand the basic workflow to a create a dynamic simulation in Aspen HYSYS Dynamics.

Set up a simple dynamics simulation of a PFR and observe effects of perturbations of controller settings.

Background
Dynamic simulation is an extension of steady-state process simulation whereby time-dependence is built into the models. Aspects of dynamic simulation not found in steady-state include start up and shut down, holdup, changing reaction conditions, and thermal changes. Reacting Acetic Acid and Enthanol produces Ethyl Acetate in the following reaction: CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O

Key Teaching Points

Heat flow can be used to control and alter a reaction.

Control valves must be sized properly to handle the range of values they need to cover.
The Dynamics Assistant provides an overview of modifications that need to be made to convert a steadystate simulation to dynamic.
The recommended changes are not always necessary nor helpful.
