to argue with the Walrus) This phrase relates to occupations, games etc. that were thought so lacking in merit that it wasn't worth the expense of a candle to create enough light to partake in them. Candles were as significant a drain on household expenses as is the electricity bill today. There are several phrases in English that express regret at having wasted valuable candlelight.
reference to wars that are not fought for chivalrous or righteous reasons, but for political, social and religious reasons. Also, when the two armies were fighting, they were all wearing nosewarmers that made them look like clowns and idiots. This further emphasizes how foolish it is to go to war.
