Not worth the candle Pg 197 (meaning it was worthless

to argue with the Walrus) This phrase relates to occupations, games etc. that were thought so lacking in merit that it wasn't worth the expense of a candle to create enough light to partake in them. Candles were as significant a drain on household expenses as is the electricity bill today. There are several phrases in English that express regret at having wasted valuable candlelight.

The battle between the Guppees and Chupwalas is a

reference to wars that are not fought for chivalrous or righteous reasons, but for political, social and religious reasons. Also, when the two armies were fighting, they were all wearing nosewarmers that made them look like clowns and idiots. This further emphasizes how foolish it is to go to war. Punitive peace proves; so dont even go to war.

The Floating Gardens on the Dull Lake and Mali the

Floating Gardener from Kahani. (Mali has the ability to assume the appearance of lifeless roots, similar to a Floating Garden. Haroun also mistakes him for a Floating Garden at first [see pg 82]) The Dull Lake in the Valley of K and the Moody Land. (The Dull Lake changed according to the peoples moods, similar to the Moody Land.)

Butt the Mail Coach Driver and Butt the Hoopoe.

(Their personality, mannerisms, the way they speak, their style and appearance are all increasingly similar.) The Walrus and Snooty Buttoo. (They both have shiny, hairless heads and moustaches that look like dead rats.) The Ocean of Notions (Rashids nickname) and the Oceans of the Streams of Story. (They both have similar names and both hold many stories.)

The sad city and Kahani. (The both bear the same

name and both mean story. They are also both being polluted by something.) Khattam-Shud and Snooty Buttoo. (Both are dictators.) The dark ship and the sadness factories. (Both produce sadness and in the dark ships case, poison.) Batcheat and Soraya. (Both have their voices constantly raised in song but Sorayas singing is top notch while Batcheats singing is horrible.)

Sorry a bit long

Angelfish, sharks and the Plentimaw Fishes. (In terms

of size, the Plentimaw Fishes are comparable to sharks while their shape is similar to those of angelfish.) Mr. Sengupta and Khattam-Shud. (They look almost the same and both are taking away something important. For instance, Mr. Sengupta took away Soraya while Khattam-Shud is destroying the Ocean.) The citizens of K and most of the Chupwalas. (A dictator oppresses both.) The Union of Zipped Lips and the phrase Zip the Lips (see pg 49). (The phrase was foreshadowing to the Union of Zipped Lips, a group of evil Chupwalas who dont speak.)

The war between Chup and Gup looked like a battle of

clowns This is to signify that a war for freedom of speech is impropriate The Gups communicated with each other while the Chups didnt In the end the Gups won and the Chups didnt
