Pure Substances
A pure substance is a sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties. Two types: Elements Compounds

Elements
Elements are pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means.
Single Atom
Cannot be separated by chemical or physical processes

Element
Pure substance Every atom is the same

Elements can be found on the periodic table!

Compounds
Pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Made of elements in a specific ratio Has a chemical formula Can only be separated by chemical means only, not physically

Single Molecule
Made of more than one type of atom bonded together

Compound

Combining two or more pure substances Substances held together by physical forces, not chemical No chemical change takes place . They can be separated physically.

Mixtures

Homogeneous mixtures are also known as solutions. Visually the solution looks uniform throughout. The different particles cannot be seen. This solution remains constant and does not separate out.

Homogeneous Mixtures

TWO TYPES:
Colloids Particles may be big enough to see under a microscope but will stay suspended over time. Suspensions Have the largest of all dispersed particles. They are visible to the eye and will settle out over time.

Heterogeneous Mixtures

Colloids scatter light, making a light beam visible when it is shown through the glass. This is known as the Tyndall Effect.

Mixtures vs. Compounds

MIXTURE COMPOSITION COMPOUND You can vary the amount Cannot change the of each substance in a amount of each element mixture in a compound Not chemically joined Each substance involved keeps its own properties Easily separated Sea water, kool-aid Chemically joined Compound has properties different from each element Separated only using chemical reactions Water
