Energy is the ability to do work. Living things need energy to carry out life processes such as..

a) breathing b) growing c) moving Energy that is needed for growing from food. Non- living things also needed energy to make them usable. A car needs energy to make it move.

A ball needs energy to make it bounce. Energy is needed to boil water. Ice also needs energy to melt. We use energy to do work such as following: a) pushing a trolley b) carrying a bag c) running d) jumping We cannot do any work without energy.

The sun Water Food Wind Fuel Battery

Sun

- the main source of energy. - produces light and heat. - we use the heat energy from the sun to dry our laundry. - to keep our bodies warm. - plants use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. - the following forms of energy comes from the sun.

- the following forms of energy comes from the sun. a) energy stored in water. b) energy stored in wind. c) energy stored in plants. d) energy stored in animals. e) energy stored in fuels.

Water
- moving or falling water produces energy.

- energy of moving water is used to generate electricity.

Food

- food contains stored energy. - living things get energy when they eat food. - humans and animals get food from plants and other animals. - plants make their own food by using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.

Wind
- moving air.

- wind is used to pump water. - wind is used to make things move. - wind energy is used to power windmills and to move ships.

Fuel

- fuels are materials that burn to produce heat energy. - examples of fuels are wood, petroleum, natural gas and coal.

Battery

- device that generated electrical energy from chemical energy. - device that supply energy to produce electricity. - batteries are used to power electrical appliances such as a torch, alarm clock and radio.

TRANSFORMATION OF ENERGY

Energy exists in different forms. The various form of energy are as shown In the diagram below. Forms of energy :

a) b) c) d) e) f) g)

Electrical energy Kinetic energy Light energy Heat energy Potential energy Sound energy Chemical energy

Electrical energy

a) produced when electricity flows. b) used in electrical appliances such as the television and computer.

Kinetic Energy - all objects that are moving have kinetic energy. - for example, the wind and a person who is walking have kinetic energy.
