Little brown seeds so small and round

Are you sleeping quietly underground?

Down came the raindrops
Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.
Out comes the rainbow
Twinkle, twinkle, twinkle.
Little brown seeds way down below
Up through the earth they
Grow, grow, grow.
Little green leaves come one by one.
They hold up their heads
And look at the sun.
Plants …
• Plants are alive, just like people and
animals. How do we know this?
Living things all do certain things:
• They grow and die.
• They need energy, nutrients, air, and
water.
• They produce young.
• They are made up of cells.
• They react to what's around them.

Parts of a plant
Parts of a plant..
• Roots
• Roots act like straws absorbing water
and minerals from the soil.
• Tiny root hairs stick out of the root,
helping in the absorption.
• Roots help to anchor the plant in the
soil so it does not fall over.
• Roots also store extra food for future
use.
Parts of a plant…
• There are two main types of roots
systems.
üTap root system.

üFibrous root system.

Root systems…
Root systems….
Tap root system…
vthe first root produced from a seed is
called a radicle.
v Radicle becomes
the tap root.
vSmall branches
grow from it.
Fibrous root system…
vRadicle is Short lived, replaced by
many roots of equal size.
vThese roots are adventitious,
means they can grow from
plant organs other than roots.
Stem…
• Stems
• Stems do many things. They support
the plant. They act like the plant's
plumbing system, conducting water
and nutrients from the roots and food
in the form of glucose from the
leaves to other plant parts.
• Stems can be herbaceous like the
bendable stem of a daisy or woody
like the trunk of an oak tree.

• Herbaceous:
Plants with stems that are usually
soft and bendable. Herbaceous
stems die back to the ground every
year.
• Woody:
Plants with stems, such as tree
trunks, that are hard and do not bend
easily. Woody stems usually don't die
back to the ground each year.
Leaves…
• Most plants' food is made in their
leaves. Leaves are designed to
capture sunlight which the plant uses
to make food through a process
called photosynthesis.
Flowers…
• Flowers help pollination by
attracting insects.
• Flowers contain pollen and tiny eggs
called ovules.
• After pollination of the flower and
fertilization of the ovule, the ovule
develops into a fruit.
Pollination…
Seeds…
• Seeds contain new plants.
• Seeds form in fruit.
• Seeds grow and it is
germination.
Germination…

• First the young root appears.

• The skin splits and the shoot
straightens, pulling the cotyledons
with it.
• The main root gets bigger and grows
side roots, and the first leaves
