Objectives
Refresh our knowledge on 3G WCDMA/UMTS/R99/HSPA/HSPA+ etc. (3GPP, not 3GPP2 North American

Standards - IS95/CDMA One etc.). Market overview. Technology overview. Not vendor specific. Not product focussed. Information - not spin.

What drove UMTS?

The principal drivers were: Shortage of capacity on GSM. Mobile multimedia. Internet convergence. Video telephony + conferencing. Email. Packet data.
Now it has momentum!

Mobile Data Growth (All standards)

Increasing Subscriber Base 2.7 billion worldwide.

WW Mobile Data Traffic Forecast 2014 1,600,000,000 GB per month.

Increasing Data Consumption Smartphones: ~100MB/mth. Laptops: ~1,500MB/mth. PC Tethering (e.g. dongles):
laptops by 2014.

HSPA accounts >11% of PC BB EU. > 50% of data traffic will be generated by

UMTS Global Market Status

HSPA Networks: >380 deployed worldwide (~95% of WCDMA networks).
HSPA+ Networks >100 deployed worldwide. Subscribers: 644 million on WCDMA worldwide.

HSPA Device Availability

~3000 HSPA device models. ~1100 support 3.6Mbps / 600 support 7.2Mbps.
~90%of HSPA devices operate at 2100MHz. ~50% of HSPA devices operate at 850MHz. >500 HSPA devices operate at 900MHz. > 900 HSPA devices incorporate WiFi. Other reasons driving mobile data usage Screen resolution increasing. Large Touch Screen devices have removed the barrier of
complicated Web navigation.

~30x data usage increase seen with Touch Screens. Simpler Web navigation - more likely to perform Web browsing.

Modulation Schemes: HSDPA & HSPA+

HSDPA

HSPA+

Low Rate Modulation

4bits/symbol(2^4)

6 bits/symbol(2^6)

Up to 21.6 Mbps Mainly improves the peak data rate. Users will see a 28% improvement for micro and 21% for macro over HSDPA R6.

HSPA+ Phase I
MIMO (28.8Mbps) 2x2 MIMO, by introducing dual data stream, doubles the data rate. Limited to cells with good cell isolation - typical scenario for MIMO is indoor.
Spatial Multiplexing Each antenna used for transmitting a different stream (dual stream). No antenna diversity in that case per stream. Spatial Multiplexing + Diversity In practice, cross path between antennas exists and diversity is still needed for reliable transmission. MIMO used both for spatial multiplexing (rate improvement) and diversity (SNR improvement).

HSPA+ (42Mbps) Options

Option 1: High order modulation DL 64QAM + 2x2 MIMO High order modulation mainly improves the peak data rate in downlink. Can be used in both macro and micro scenarios, however high order
modulation in micro cells will have better performance than in macro cells. UEs available ~Q1 2011.

Option 2: HSPA on two adjacent 5MHz carriers, the resources can be better utilized in a coordinated way Capacity improvements over 2 single carrier networks. UEs available ~Q3 2010 A key Mobile Broadband enabler
Trials from 2010.

UMTS900
Better coverage than at 2100MHz Physics. Lower deployment costs.

900 spectrum is scarce But GSM can operate on 1800MHz for roamers etc. UMTS (etc.) can operate in 4.2MHz bandwidth. Now >500 handset models.
