PROPORTI ON

PROPORTION IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF ONE PART TO ANOTHER, OR TO THE WHOLE, OR BETWEEN ONE OBJECTS AND ANOTHER.

In ancient Greece the proportion which dominated design was called the Golden Mean. This guideline for proportion is still used today to create interest and give pleasing effects. The proportions of two parts to three parts (2:3), three parts to five parts (3:5), or five parts to eight parts (5:8) are more interesting than equal divisions of halves or quarters. Proportion: harmony of scale.

Proportion is usually defined as a comparison of dimensions or distribution of forms . Good proportion creates rhythm and a sense of harmony or unity in a composition or design. It looks at the relationship in size and scale between objects in a composition. Proportion can be used to help define symmetry and visual weight, and can often create a sense of tension that focuses the eye, and can often create a sense of tension that focuses the eye.

PROPORTION IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF ONE PART TO ANOTHER, OR TO THE WHOLE, OR BETWEEN ONE OBJECTS AND ANOTHER. The comparative relationships of proportion can work on any or all of the following four levels: Within one part: - as in comparing the length to width of an object. Among parts: - as in comparing the size of the pelmet to the size of the curtain. Part to the whole: - as comparing the total area of the tablecloth covered by the tablemats. Whole to environment: - as when relating the size and shape of a dining table to the shape and size of the dining space.

Proportion is defined in terms of magnitude (size), quantity, or degree.

The size of an object is influenced by the relative sizes of other objects in its environment, and by the environment itself. So for example, a tiny picture on a large wall looks lost, while a large one or a cluster of small ones looks wellproportioned.

People respond emotionally to proportion but when something is out of proportion it can evoke negative feelings. This could, of course, be the desired effect

How is good proportion achieved in interior design?

Good proportion in interior design looks at the relationship between the number of pieces in the room; between the amount, the value, and the intensity of colours; and between the quality and kind of textures used. We speak of proportion in terms of the ratio of one object to another. size - bigger or smaller shape - wider or narrower amount - more or less than quality - textured or smooth GOOD PROPORTION

BAD PROPORTION

Proportion deals with shapes, forms and their dimensions. It is closely related to scale and is usually expressed in terms of the size relationship of parts to one another and to the whole. For example, it is the relationship of a chair seat or back to its base or arms. When the proportion is correctly balanced, the look is pleasing.

In organizing line, surface and hollow space, a number of basic concepts will enter into design decisions. One of the most important concept is proportion. Others include balance, size, scale, harmony, unity, variety, contrast, rhythm and emphasis. Proportion With this design concept, the interior designer deals with sizes, shapes and spacing. There is need for every piece in the interior to harmonise with others, to be in scale with one another and produce an attractive interior. Furniture in the interior space needs to be in proportion with other furniture, as the groupings in the interior need to be in proportion with one another. The designer should keep in mind the size of the interior space when deciding on proportions.

As an example, a large item like a wall unit should not be made to dwarf other items in the interior space. Where the interior space is large, then massive pieces of furniture are suitable and marked contrasts in the interior have a very positive effect.

A proportioning system can be a useful tool for a harmonious composition, but interiors are three-dimensional, not flat like a painting or a photograph. Also keep in mind that our perception of things is often imprecise: viewing distance, the foreshortening of perspective, and even cultural backgrounds can influence the way we perceive our environment, and affect proportion.

Proportion is typically based on ratios. For example, a table that is well proportioned has side dimensions that related well to each other, creating a nicely shaped rectangle. A sofa table should be relatively narrow and the same height as the back of the sofa.

All parts of a furnished room must help express one ideal of balance. The realization of this ideal is proportion. A horizontal room calls for horizontal furniture and lines, a vertical room for vertical ones. Every important decorative feature of a room must be selected in accordance with its proportion in general. The size of a room increases the form scale (or scale of the forms) represented by furniture, pictures, rugs, etc. In every room the important individual pieces, such as library table, piano, bed, dresser, must parallel one or another wall. Do not violate proportion and artistic effect by overcrowding.

Here the balloon shades are placed so that they fall right below the half way point of the window creating a nice visual proportion. Also notice how there are three balloons on the one window and two on the other windows creating a pleasing proportion. The details of the window itself (not just the size) need to be considered when designing the treatment. Two matching, but larger, balloons would have ruined the design.

All items are working in relation to each other and overall, seems pleasing to the eye. No one item is too large or too small. This is imperative to having the right proportions in a room.

This hotel lobby has a great deal of seating and visual weight given to each object to make up this collective space. It looks like at each piece in a room as addition: This, plus this, plus this = proportional design.
