pulleys. Large demands on a belt drive transmission has led to many variations on the theme.
driven shaft. To change the speed. Serves to bridge the physical gap between motor and machine. To transmit the power from one source to different shafts. To minimize the noise due to motion.
Belt
Belt is a looped strip of flexible
material Used to mechanically link two or more rotating shafts. Used as a source of motion, to efficiently transmit power, or to track relative movement.
Belts
Belts are looped over pulleys. In a two pulley system, the belt can either drive

Flat belts
Flat belts were used early in line shafting to
transmit power in factories. Flat belt pulleys need to be carefully aligned to prevent the belt from slipping off. The flat belt also tends to slip on the pulley face when heavy loads are applied. In practice, such belts were often given a half-twist before joining the ends
Round belts
Round belts are a circular cross section belt
designed to run in a pulley with a circular groove. They are for use in low torque situations and may be purchased in various lengths Or cut to length and joined, either by a staple, gluing or welding. Early sewing machines utilized a leather belt, joined either by a metal staple or glued.
Vee belts
pulley with the result that the belt cannot slip off.
For high-power requirements, two or more vee belts can be
Timing Belts
Timing belts (also known as Toothed, Notch or Cog) Belts are a positive transfer belt and can track relative
movement. These belts have teeth that fit into a matching toothed pulley. When correctly tensioned, they have no slippage and are often used to transfer direct motion Timing belts with a helical offset tooth design are available. The helical offset tooth design forms a chevron pattern and causes the teeth to engage progressively.
Specialty Belts
Belts normally transmit power only on the
tension side of the loop. Designs for continuously variable transmissions exist that use belts that are a series of solid metal blocks Linked together as in a chain, transmitting power on the compression side of the loop.
Gilmer belt
Gilmer belt is a trade name for a type of belt used for
controlled cars.
Gilmer belts are also very useful in full-scale automotive
engines. Their precise pulley synchronization makes them a great candidate for valvetrain application.
Some motorcycles use Gilmer belts instead of chain
Composition of belts
LEATHER---Leather is most important
material for the belts. COTTON---Cotton layers are stitched . RUBBER---These belts are used in moisture environments. BALATA---These belts are acid and water proof.
VELOCITY RATIO
It is the ratio of the speed of driven pulley
to that of driving pulley. Rotational speed of driven velocity ratio = ------------------------------Rotational speed of driver N2 D1 velocity ratio = ----=-----N1 D2
LENGTH OF BELT
L=3.14(R+r)+(R-r)/c+2c
L=Length of belt
R=Radius of bigger pulley
PROBLEMS
Slip of beltCaused due to large
difference in tensions between tight and slack sides of the belt Which is too large to be resisted by friction between belt and the pulley This results in relative motion between the belt and the pulley which is known as slip.

to another. Used in factories. Used in machines. Used in factories to transmit raw materials. Used to transmit product.
