Phrasal verb are combinations of a verb and an adverb or preposition in
which the meaning can not always be understood as the sum of its parts.
One can “run up a hill”. But this is not the same as the phrasal verb run
up as in “run up a bill”.
e.g.: I ran into my teacher at the movies last night.
• run + into = meet
He ran away when he was 15.
• run + away = leave home

Pattern

Verb + Preposition/adverb
Some particles can be separated (separable) from the verb

so that a noun and pronoun can be inserted, and some

particles can't be separated (inseparable) from the verb.


Separable
e.g. : add up (meaning: to add)
Phrasal Verb Correct: She added up the total on her
calculator.

Correct: She added it up on her calculator.


Inseparable
e.g. : get around (meaning: to evade)
Correct: She always gets around the rules.
Incorrect : She always gets the rules around
(This construction makes no sense in English)
add up something check in

to leave a place in order to go to become older or an adult
somewhere else e.g. : She grew up in Madrid.
