What are the Migration Tools in XI R2?

One migration tool
A single migration tool = The Import Wizard Automated update of documents, Universes, users (and security profiles), groups, categories, and EPM content The migration step is mandatory Import Wizard also used for life-cycle management

One conversion tool

To convert full-client documents to Web Intelligence Legacy Web Intelligence .wqy to current .wid format update Takes advantage of new Web Intelligence features The conversion step is optional Conversion tool delivery (CD or not) will depend on conversion rate

Slide 22

What is the Import Wizard?

The Import Wizard is the tool used for migration to XI
Imports users, security, BI content and PM content The Import Wizard is available with BusinessObjects Enterprise XI

A Win32 client application

To import content from a source system to an XI system Supports same Windows versions as BusinessObjects Enterprise

Source systems include

BusinessObjects 5.1.4 and up, 6.0, 6.1, 6.5 Crystal Enterprise 8.5, 9, 10 BusinessObjects XI and XI Release 2 Note: Seagate Info 7.5 and CE 8 customers must move to XI, not XI R2

Installs with BusinessObjects Enterprise install

Must be installed on a Windows machine Use a Custom install if you want to install only the Import Wizard
Slide 23

How Does The Import Wizard Work?

Acts as a bridge between source and target repository
Imports content from source repository Updates content (e.g., universe IDs in reports) Exports content into target CMS and FRS

Import Wizard requires 4 connections/paths

A BOMain.key file to connect to the source repository A path to Storage/Mail on source server A path to Storage/Users on source server An ID and password to connect to the target CMS

Requires appropriate hardware

Fast hard disk (series of report Open/Save operations) Fast connections to 5.1/6.x system and XI system

Slide 24

Additional Points about the Import Wizard

Import Wizard can import from XIr2 environments Import Wizard can create BIAR files Use the Import Wizard for Dev/Test/Prod Migration between XIr2 environments

XI R2 CMS

Install full client 5.1/6.x and XI R2 side by side on client desktop

Users can access both 5.1.x/6.x and XI R2 repository during the transition period XI R2 can read legacy .rep 5.1/6.5 cannot read XI R2 .rep

Import Wizard

Uninstall 5.1/6.x version

Some thoughts on Migration Best Practices

The Business Objects Enterprise XI security model is different from the old Business Objects model Automatic conversion of security rules is possible 300 rules vs. 2 rules Take opportunity to leverage new security capabilities, it is more powerful in XI than E6.x Maybe take the opportunity to integrate security with LDAP or AD The Reverse Bridge XI r2 will talk to your existing implementations

Slide 32

Report Migration and Conversion

Reports have a shelf life (some should be scrapped, some re-engineered) Conversion tool can convert most full client to Web Intelligence Interactive/Analysis reports vs. static, high volume/high distribution production reports Your Existing skillset Use the reverse bridge and let your old reports die on the vine

Slide 33

Migration of Full Client Documents

Corporate documents (i.e., docs in a 5.1/6.x repository)
.rep migration accomplished by the Import Wizard Import Wizard opens rep files, updates universe IDs and saves them to the new format

Local documents
Option 1: Upload local documents to the repository and run Import Wizard Option 2: Open and save local documents with Desktop Intelligence Saving a doc with Desktop Intelligence automatically migrates it
