A digital certificate can be Presented electronically to prove your identity, to access information or services on the Internet . The digital signature certificate contains the digital signature of an individual and is authorized by a certifying authority.

A digital signature can be used with any kind of message. The receiver can make sure of the sender's identity The receiver can make sure that the message arrived is intact.

Controller of Certifying Authority (CCA)

The Controller of Certifying Authority, the central body accountable for Digital Signature in India. There are 7 Certifying Authorities licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authority Any of these CAs can be approached and digital signature can be received.

How to get a digital signature from RA NIC?

1. Download application form from https://nicca.nic.in 2. Fill in and submit RA at NIC Trivandrum with required fee for the token 3. RA will verify the application and if accepted a token will be issued along with a user ID and password.

Client Side preparatory steps

Initialise the token, Enroll in nicca site and then download the certificate Initialize the token Select a windows PC (XP / 2007) in the office (Do not use Vista PCs) Check the JRE and if required update to JRE 1.6.0_29 or above Do not update / install any software in this PC after initializing and till the certificate is downloaded.

Do not upgrade JRE also.

Client Side preparatory steps

For this Set Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced -> JRE Auto Download -> Never Auto Download) Use IE browser for enrolling and download. Keep the security settings in the IE browser (Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom) as medium enabling all Active X related and scripting related options.

Eg: 1. if device is Gemealto, Select Microsoft Base smart card crypto provider. 2. If device is Moserbaer or starkey, Select safe sign standard Cryptographic service provider

Then generate the request for certificate. A private key and public key will be generated and stored in the token.
This key will be certified by NICCA and certificate download PIN will be send to the email id provided while enrolling. After getting the download PIN login to https://nicca.nic.in and download the certificate into the token.
