WHAT IS SAFETY?
The condition of being SAFE from UNDERGOING or CAUSING HURT, INJURY or LOSS. A DEVICE designed to PREVENT HAZARDOUS operations.

Synonyms: PROTECTION, SECURITY

Why is SAFETY important?

safety is about what you can do to protect the people you are responsible for. Its the right thing to do. Teachers should send their students home in the same condition they came in. a safe work environment boosts students, teachers and school employees morale, which, in turn, increases productivity, efficiency and profit margins. When people feel like they have a good, safe work environment, they feel like they can make a difference.

A solid safety program can help protect a companys reputation. In our case, school reputation.

the practice of safety also brings financial benefits to the table. A safe work/school environment impacts a projects bottom line both directly and indirectly.

To make things clear and short

There are 3 key reasons why safety is important: MORALITY LEGALITY/ IMAGE FINANCIAL

RISKS AND HAZARDS

What is risk?
A possibility of LOSS or INJURY. Someone or something that creates or suggests HAZARD. The combination of the likelihood of a hazardous event occurring and the consequence of the event.

Synonyms: danger, threat, trouble

What is hazard?
Anything that has the POTENTIAL to cause harm. A SOURCE of danger.

HAZARDOUS EVENT- takes place when someone or something interacts with the hazard.

What is risk assessment?

A means of making sure that the most serious risks are managed and controlled. A careful observation and assessment of anything in the school that could cause people to suffer injury or illhealth while they are in the premises.

To summarize:
Risks = likelihood x consequence Hazards- any potential source of harm Hazardous event- interaction to the hazard Risk Assessment- managing risks so that any possible harm will not occur.

Kinds of Common Hazards

Aggression and Violence Bullying Chemicals and Harmful Substances Computers and Workstations Electricity Fire Getting in and out Heights

Housekeeping Lighting Manual handling Noise Slips and Trips Stress Temperature Vehicles and Transport Safety

REPORTING AND INVESTIGATING RISKS, INCIDENTS AND/OR ACCIDENTS

What is accident? Incident?

Accident- an undesired event that results in injury/ property damage Incident- an event or condition that does not cause harm but has the potential to do so.

Why is it important to investigate?

To collect the information you may need to pass on to enforcing authorities.

To clearly identify the cause of incident or accident to stop it from happening again.

Remember:

Incidents that dont result in any loss, damage or injury, also need to be reported. Because this could cause injury or loss next time it happens.

Reporting the accident or incident

As soon as possible after the accident, we need to tell the supervisor. The supervisor will then start the reporting process. In most organizations, the reporting process depends on the severity of the injury or damage. In case of severe injury or damage the reporting process will be carried out to the senior management for immediate and appropriate action.
