What is Cloud Computing?

What is Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a style of computing where massively scalable IT-related capabilities are provided as a service across the Internet to multiple external customers Cloud computing: A pool of abstracted, highly scalable, and managed infrastructure capable of hosting end-customer applications and billed by consumption Cloud computing is Web-based processing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices (such as smart phones) on demand over the Internet.

Sample Architecture of Cloud Computing

Common Characteristics of Cloud Computing

On-demand self-service. Broad network access. Resource pooling. Rapid elasticity. Measured service.

Cloud Computing Models

Types Of Cloud Computing

Public Cloud
Owned and managed by service provider. Customer has no control over the infrastructure location. Services provided on pay per use basis.

Infrastructure pool is shared.

Lacks security, variance and limited configurations. Used only when the standardized pool is shared by lots of people.

Private Cloud
Infrastructure is made available to an organization. Limits access to enterprise and partner network. Retains high degree of control, privacy and security. Accessed from "inside" the firewall. Can be expensive. Can be hosted internally or externally.

76 % of the decision makers focus on private cloud.

Hybrid Cloud
A hybrid infrastructure takes advantage of both public and private clouds: Critical applications hosted on private cloud Less critical applications hosted on public cloud.

Similar to Cloud Bursting.

Community Cloud
Infrastructure is shared between organizations. Organizations must be of the same community.

Examples of Cloud Computing

Amazon EC2 & S3
Google App Engine Windows Azure Google App

Amazon is one of the foremost and most reputed Cloud Computing service-provider.
Most central services: Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) Amazon EC2(Elastic Compute Cloud)

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

Remote data storage. Low cost- pay per usage basis. High bandwidth. Fast, reliable and scalable.

Amazon EC2(Elastic Compute Cloud)

Allows users to rent virtual computers on which to run their own computer applications.
A user can create, launch, and terminate server instances as needed. Payment by the hour for active servers.

Windows Azure is a cloud computing platform and infrastructure.

Created by Microsoft. Used for building, deploying and managing apps and services through a global network of Microsoftmanaged datacenters. It provides both PaaS and IaaS services. Supports many different programming languages, tools and frameworks.

App Engine
Google App Engine (GAE) allows developers to build applications that can run on Googles infrastructure. Applications are sandboxed and run across multiple servers.

Google Apps is a services from Google providing independently customizable versions of several Google products under a custom domain name.

Includes Gmail, Google Groups, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites.

Advantages
Cost Efficient Almost Unlimited Storage Automatic Software Integration Easy Access to Information Quick Deployment

Disadvantages
Technical Issues Security in the Cloud Prone to Attack privacy
