INTRODUCTION

To measure the thread geometry accurately. Use of thread gauges is made, since it takes the form of mating surfaces.

Thread gauges

Classification of thread gauges

Mainly classified into two broad groups.
1.To check the product 2.Reference

Various forms of thread gauges

1. Plug screw gauges
2. Ring screw gauges 3. caliper gauges

Plug Screw Gauges

Uses:
> To check major, minor and effective diameters. > To ensure size of pitch, angle or form of threads.

In plug gauges, the NOGO gauge is required for minor, major and also for effective diameters

Mainly two types of gauges, they are

>GO gauges >NOGO gauges Plug gauges are made in different designs according to the purpose for which they are required.
Most widely used patterns are given below:

for gauges parallel external screw threads

for gauges parallel internal screw threads

For Gauges Parallel External screw thread

following 3 gauges are recommended

1. Plain caliper gauge to check the tolerance on the major dia.

screw caliper with special features is used to check the minimum effective diameter. 3. screw caliper with full form gauging features is used to check the max.effective diameter.```
2.

For Gauges Parallel Internal Screw Thread

>following 3 gauges are recommended

1. GO and NOGO plug gauges are used to check the tolerance on the minor dia. 2. A GO plug gauge is used to check minimum effective dia. 3. NOGO plug gauge is used to check the maximum effective dia.

Ring Screw Gauges

>For the production gauging of bolts, the equivalent mating surface of the bolt threads are known as ring gauge >If the pitch diameter is oversize, the ring will not engage. >Excessive screw thread lead errors, like taper will be detected within the few turns of ring gauge.

Caliper Gauges
Caliper gauges are general measuring tool for outside diameters, bores, hole depth.

They are equivalent of gap gauges with thread forms on the anvil
Mainly the external threads are gauged with the

help of caliper type gauge having two sets of anvils.

Gauge Wear
Wear take place more rapidly in screw thread gauges than in plain gauges.

The allowance recommended for wear on generally used solid ring and plug gauges are 0.05mm.

Adjustable Thread Gauge

Wickman Adjustable Thread gauge

PRINCIPLE:
>To ensure truly interchangeable thread work of

sound mechanical strength by controlling within the prescribed limits, the major, minor and the effective diameters.

WORKING:
>To set the gauge, the anvils are first adjusted by means of adjustable screws.. >An intermediate adjustment, where the setting gauges can just slide through the anvils is the desirable setting. >The anvils are of hardened tool steel and made sliding fit in their holder. >The frame of the gauge is of cast iron.

functions Of Various Types Of Gauges

Gauges for major diameter To check the minimum limit of pitch diameter

Maximum size of minor diameter

To check the maximum wear limit Used for setting the adjustable GO screw ring

gauge to the specified diameters
