Many Americans were worried about the influx of such a large number of immigrants not assimilating into the USA way of life Fear of radical and dangerous political ideas communism and anarchism Fear of losing jobs immigrants accept lower wages. Swamp already crowded cities 80% of New York = foreign born or children of immigrants, Chicago = 50% Enclaves or ghettoes develop? Fear of Catholicism? Blame immigrants for crime and violence

Coincide with Industrial Revolution in the USA. Immigrants often take dangerous and dirty jobs. 16hrs per day sweatshop exploitation Poor housing and poverty. But govt do nothing laissez faire!!

Return of Cleveland and the democrats


By 1892/3 Harrison and the republicans were so unpopular that Cleveland and the democrats were back in the White House People had reacted to the big business dominance of the Republican party. Cleveland no better!! There was a Economic Depression in 1893 !! The west was also influential in changing the political map of America. Mass immigration Populism was born!!

What was populism?


Beliefs based upon the interests and opinions of ordinary people. Populist Party formed 1892. First Leader = James B Weaver Linked to Democratic Party. Anti urban party, got support from rural areas and factory workers Against control by banks, big business and rich elite Anti capitalism Wanted bimetallism silver and gold to support currency because it meant credit was easier to get hold of.

What caused populism?

In 1892 the new Populist Party put forward James Weaver as candidate for President. Did badly only won 4 million votes but influence people particularly the Democratic Party?
