2 Divisions (Anthropologists)
1.) Material culture consists of objects (such as dress, art, religious artifacts or eating utensils.) 2.) Non-material culture consists of beliefs, culture, language & social institutions.

Characteristics of Culture
1.) Culture is Learned it is not instinctive or innate. It is learned though life experience after birth. 2.) Culture is Taught it is transmitter from parents to children over succesive generations language is the chief vehicle of culture

3.) Culture is Social It originates and develop through the interactions of people. 4.) Culture is Adaptive Customs beliefs & practices change slowly, but they do adapt to the social environment & to the biologic & psychologic needs of people.

5.) Culture is Integrative the elements in a culture tend to form a consistent & integrated system. ex. religious beliefs & practices influence & are influenced by family organization, economic values, & health practices.

6.) Culture is Ideational means forming images or objects in the mind. *The group habits that are part of Culture are to a consisderable extend ideal norms or patterns of behavior. People do not always follow those norms. The norms of their culture may in fact be different from the norms of society as a while.

7.Culture is Satisfying
Cultural habits persist only as long as they satisfy peoples needs. Gratification Strengthens habits & beliefs. Once they no longer gratification, they may disappear.

Ethnicity is the condition of belonging to a specific ethnic group.

Ethnic group is a set of individuals who share a unique cultural & social heritage passed on from one generation to another.

ETHNICITY thus differs from RACE

Race denotes a system of classifying humans into subgroups according to specific physical characteristic, including skin pigmentation, stature, facial features, texture of the body, hair, and head form.

variety of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole.

 the many separate societies that

emerged around the globe differed markedly from each other, and many of these differences persist to this day.

Cultural values differ from nation to nation because they often arise from environmental conditions. * In a country where water is scarce, daily bathing is not valued; * In a country where meat is scarce, ethnic recipes use little meat.

As well as the more obvious cultural

differences that exist between people, such as language, dress, and traditions, there are also significant variations in the way societies organize themselves, in their shared conception of morality, and in the ways they interact with their environment.
