SLOPE & INTERCEPT

APPLIES TO LAI AND LAO POINTS. SLOPE AND INTERCEPT ARE FACTORS USED TO CONVERT THE SIGNALS THE FIELD PANEL USES FOR ANALOG POINTS INTO THE ENGINEERING UNITS THAT REPRESENT THE POINT VALUES.

THE FORMULAS USED TO CALCULATE SLOPE AND INTERCEPT ARE DETERMINED BY THE TYPE OF FIELD PANEL OR FLN DEVICE THAT CONTAINS THE POINT AND THE TYPE OF PHYSICAL INPUT OR OUTPUT DEVICE REPRESENTED BY THE POINT.
YOU CAN USE THE SLOPE INTERCEPT CALCULATOR TO AUTOMATICALLY CALCULATE A POINTS SLOPE AND INTERCEPT.

SLOPE & INTERCEPT

Slope : Intercept : Controls the range of a points value and rate of change. Controls the final value of a point and can be adjusted in some cases for calibration purposes.

The SLOPE & INTERCEPT: value for physical devices is preset for each device. value for virtual points can be chosen for your needs.

The Slope value dictates the absolute minimum value of your COV. The Intercept value dictates the absolute minimum value of your point.

SLOPE - PHYSICAL POINTS

The slope range of the physical point is preset, for example 0.02 You can change the result by changing the slope value. Example : a range of 10 volts has a slope of 0.02. If you change the slope to 0.2 then the range becomes 100 (i.e. 10 x 10) and you can change the units to percent. Example : a range of 10,000 volts has a slope of 5.0. If you change the slope to 0.005 then the range becomes 10 (i.e. 10,000 / 1000) and you can change the units to kV.

SLOPE - VIRTUAL POINTS

The slope value of the virtual point is variable, your choice. The most common default value is 1.0. However this gives us a range of approx. 32,000 and a minimum COV value of 1.0 Some points need a scale higher than 32,000. Using a slope of 10.0 gives a range 10 times higher, with the range to 320,000. The minimum COV value is now 10.0 Some points need a COV value lower than 1.0. Using a slope of 0.1 gives a range 1/10 of the 32,000 with the range to only 3,200. The minimum COV value is now 0.1 Rule of Thumb - Points like Proportional Gain use a slope of 10.0 Rule of Thumb - Points like Temp Setpoints use a slope of 0.1

INTERCEPT - PHYSICAL POINTS

The intercept value of the physical point is preset, for example -40.0 You can change the result by changing the intercept value however, producing a calibration effect. Example : When you change the intercept the rate of change of the point stays the same but we cut the scale at a different value (See slide for example).

Original Intercept crosses at 6

New Intercept crosses at 8

INTERCEPT - VIRTUAL POINTS

The intercept value of the virtual point is variable, your choice. The intercept value of the virtual point sets the lowest value possible for the point. The most common default value is 0.0. However this gives us only a positive range for our point. If we need a negative range the intercept must be set to a negative value. Example intercept of -100 will give us a minimum value of -100

CHANGE OF VALUE
THE MINIMUM CHANGE OF VALUE FOR A POINT IS THE VALUE YOU HAVE SELECTED FOR THE SLOPE.
THE ACCEPTABLE ENTRIES FOR THE CHANGE OF VALUE FOR A POINT IS ANY DIRECT MULTIPLE OF THE SLOPE VALUE. IF YOU ENTER A VALUE THAT IS NOT A DIRECT MULTIPLE THE EDITOR FUNCTION WILL ROUND IT DOWN TO THE NEAREST ACCEPTABLE VALUE.
