This oldest Gayatri Mantra is given in Rig Veda 3/62/10, also given in Yajur Veda 22/9,30/2,36/3, Saam Veda 1462 and in some other form in Atharva Veda. This Mantra has been praised in Manu Smriti 2/81 as the mouth of God. Sage Vishwamitra wrote this.

Primordial sound representing the creation of cosmos, sound of movement of galaxies, sound of mother nature, sound of God.

Meaning of GAYATRI MANTRA



The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, creating the sound of Aum (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who

manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur), is


worthy of bowing / respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that

deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo)


guide in right direction (prachodayat), our (nah) intellect (dhiyo).

Religious meaning of GAYATRI MANTRA


We meditate on the glory of the Creator; Who has created the Universe; Who is worthy of Worship; Who is the embodiment of Knowledge and Light; Who is the remover of all Sin and Ignorance; May He enlighten our Intellect. We meditate upon the universal divine light of that adorable supreme Power, which enlighten our intellect and towards Divinity.

Why Gayatri Mantra is so complete.


Any Mantra is complete, if it consists of following three parts :1. Stotra (description of the glory)

2. Dhyana (meditation)
3. Prarthana (prayer) All these are contained in the Gayatri Mantra, as following :-

1. The first nine words of the mantra --Om-Bhur-Bhuvas-SwahTat-Savitur-Varenyam-Bhargo-Devasya-- represent the attributes or glory of the Divine, hence stotra.

2. Dheemahi - pertains to dhyana (meditation).


3. Dheeyo yo nah Prachodayat - is the prarthana or prayer to the God.

IMPORTANCE OF CHANTING OF GAYATRI MANTRA


The mantra is thus a prayer to God to confer all powers and talents to the devotee. When does a prayer become meaningful? It is only when you stabilize your mind and turn it toward God. The basis for this is to meditate, pray, and experience. It is essential to achieve harmony in thought, word, and deed. Gayatri is teaching this great lesson, as serious chanting of Gaytri Mantra allows us to meditate, pray and experience. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GAYATRI MANTRA


Gayatri is a mantra which inspires righteous wisdom. It requests the Almighty God to illuminate our intellect, which in turn shall lead us on the righteous path. This is the only such prayer in the

world, which is requesting for improvement in our intellect, so as


to perform right things. All the problems of a person are solved if he is endowed with righteous wisdom. A wise man intuitively finds solutions to the problems. Those who lack this clear-sightedness find themselves always facing problems and ever living from crisis to crises. The

worship of Gayatri mantra bestows the boon of righteous wisdom.


The teachings of and the powers incorporated in Gayatri mantra fulfil this purpose. Righteous wisdom starts emerging as soon as

Jap of this mantra is taken up as a Sadhana.
