Explain what is Inertia Describe the relationship between Mass and Inertia Gives examples of real life situations

involving Inertia Suggests ways to reduce the negative effects of Inertia

Inertia

is the tendency of an object to remain at rest, or if moving, to keep moving at constant speed in a straight line.

Inertia

makes the moving object continue to move at a constant speed in the same direction unless some external force changes the objects motion

It

tends to stay in that position unless some force puts that object into motion

Inertia

is not a physical quantity, thus it does not have a unit The property of Inertia is found from the Newtons First Law of Motion

An object continues in its state of rest, or if moving it continues to move with uniform velocity, unless compelled by some external force to act otherwise.

If an object has no acceleration, it will move at a constant speed in a straight line. In a circular motion, the objects speed is constant. However, its direction is always changing. The direction of the object is along the tangent of the circle where the object is at that instance. Since the direction is always changing, we can conclude that an object moving in a circle has an acceleration. By Newtons Law, an object that is accelerating has a resultant force. In a circular motion, the resultant force is acting towards the centre of the circle. This centripetal force is a resultant force and can manifest in many different forms. The centripetal force that makes the Moon revolves round Earth is due to gravity. The centripetal force that makes a stone move round when we swing is the tension in the rope. The centripetal force that makes a car move in a circular road is the friction between its tyres and the road. Since the velocity of the object is along the tangent of the circle at any point in time, if the centripetal force is suddenly removed, such as when the string is cut, the object will move in a straight line in the direction of the tangent prior to the centripetal force was removed.

Mass?? Base quantity Scalar quantity Constant wherever it is measured The S.I. unit is kg (kilogram)

Mass can influenced the effect of Inertia An object with a larger mass has a larger Inertia

Lorries carrying bulky and heavy objects will need to have those objects properly secured to prevent them from moving forward and injuring the driver in case the lorry stops suddenly, or to prevent them from falling off the lorry and thereby damaging the vehicles behind them in case of sudden acceleration.

Do not put loose objects on the front or rear panel of a car. Seat belts must be fastened at all times, including the passenger in the back seat.
