Summer is a great time to be outside and enjoy the weather. But summer activities bring additional risks to your health. Be sure to be safe this summer by knowing these summer health risks. A little bit of prevention can keep your summer safe.

What are the Hazards of Summer?

SKIN CANCER
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Over one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. If caught early, skin cancer is usually treated easily. Skin cancer is more common in people who: Have spent lots of time in the sun or have been sunburned. Have fair skin, hair and eyes. Have a family member who has had skin cancer. Are over the age 50. .

Protect yourself by having regular skin screenings and wearing the appropriate sunscreen. For extra protection, wear a sunhat if you plan to be outdoors for an extended period of time, and keep in mind the suns peak hours are between 10:00am and 4:00pm

Heat stroke
Heat stroke is a serious medical condition that can be life threatening. In heat stroke, the body's core temperature rises. Much like a fever, extremely high body temperatures can lead to permanent damage. Some signs of heat stroke include: Confusion Short, rapid breathing Stopping sweating A fast pulse

Heat stroke is a medical emergency that calls for immediate medical assistance.

Take these steps to prevent heat stroke during hot weather: Don't overexert yourself. Drink a quart of fluids an hour. Wear loose clothing light in color and fabric, as well as a hat and sunblock, and stay in the shade or indoors if possible. Open windows and use fans, or turn on air conditioning. If you don't have air conditioning, go to a public place that does, like a mall, library, or movie theater. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can speed up dehydration.

Damaging your eyes with UV rays

During the summer, you might be tempted to look at the sky. However, if you do so, do not look directly at the sun and wear sunglasses to avoid damaging your eyes with UV rays. Be sure your sunglasses filter out 100 percent of UV light.

Dehydration

Dehydration can happen quickly in the summer heat. Be sure that you have water handy whenever you will be in the heat for a long time. Don't forget about children too they may not ask for water. Be sure to take frequent water breaks during the kids' summer activities.

Driving accidents
Driving accidents are the number one killer for young people. Avoid summer driving accidents by: Avoid using cellular phone while driving Drive at a normal speed and obey the speed limit Dont drink and drive Keeping summer road trips to a reasonable length Never driving after midnight

Drowning

In Vietnam, each year over 12,000 people drown in waterrelated accidents including 6,000 children. Summer months also have a higher occurrence of waterrelated injuries. Prevent these summer tragedies through supervision, proper pool safety and enforcing rules around the water.

Learn to swim and know your limits Swim in supervised areas Obey NO DIVING signs Dont drink and swim Wear Life Preservers when boating and fishing Use common sense - dont swim after eating, while chewing gum or after drinking. If you have a pool and have children, always stay with them when they are playing in

Food Poisoning

Summer eating can be enjoyable with fresh seasonal produce, outdoor eating and entertaining for special occasions or family gatherings. Unfortunately, food poisoning is more common in summer than at any other time of year.

These tips will help to protect you and your family from food-borne illness in the summer Wash your hands thoroughly before handling food and after handling raw foods Wash dishcloths and tea towels regularly and let them dry before you use them again Cook food thoroughly Keep your fridge temperature below 50C Keep raw meat, chicken and seafood chilled and away from cooked food Avoid handling food when youre not

Bug Bites

Everyone gets bug bites during the summer. No matter what you do, you will always be bitten by bugs. Bug bites can be dangerous because you can get infectious diseases such as petechial fever (st xuyt huyt), Lyme disease (pht ban kinh nin) . Prevent bug bites and infection this summer by avoiding buggy situations, using a good bug repellent and wearing long pants and sleeves when in buggy areas.

Fire injury
Summer and warm weather outdoor and travel-related activities often involve fire and burn injury hazards and almost anyone can be injured By observing simple prevention guidelines, these activities can be fire and burn-safe as well as fun: Keep children at a safe distance from the heat and flames while grilling Keep water or fire extinguisher nearby Never add starter fluid to hot/warm coals Never use gasoline to start, enhance or revive a fire
