ENGLISH FOR MEDICAL COMMUNICATION


- Why do we study English? - What kind of English do we study? - How do we study it? - How many English words do you know? - How many English medical terms do you know? - How many English sentences do you know? - How many English functions do you know? - Have you ever practiced the English expressions adjusted to hospital settings? - But why do we study grammar?

Doctor and patient interview English functions used: - Greeting - Asking the symptoms - The length of the problem - Getting to know the patients personal and social background (taking history) - Closing

How does the grammar work? It can examine the sentences we produce It can classify their parts. It names the word classes. It can describe the way we produce sentences. (the way we do the constructing) So why do we need grammar? We can know infinite number of sentences but our finite minds can not store them all, so we need some means of creating sentences

The constructions
(1) Be + non verb V. ing = in progress activity V.III = passive to inf. = must Examples: My friend is a doctor He is examining a patient You are wanted by the professor I am to meet him by 9

(2) Modal + V.I/Be


examples: Can I help you? He may suffer from malaria. The rector used to study at Warmadewa University. You should check his condition before you do the operation. Would you mind opening your mouth wide? I will be there He used to study there.

(3) Have + V.III/been = sudah .. Examples: My son has got asthma since he was a child. We have prepared all the materials. I have bought the book. She has been very critical. How long have you been here? Has he got difficulty in remembering things.

(4) V.I (s/es) is used to express habitual activities. s/es is added to the verb when the subject is third person singular. Do/does is needed for the negative and interrogative sentences Examples: The professor supervises the student. It really hurts when I bend my knee. My muscles fee stiff in the morning. Do you get out of breath easily? He does not have a good appetite.

(5) V.II is used to express past activities. for negative and interrogative sentences, aux did is needed. Examples: When did the pain last? I did not give him any medicine. She graduated from medical school. We learnt about it before. What did you say?

The verb is the back bound of the sentences. The verb can be generally formulated into: 1. be + non verb 2. be + verb. Ing 3. modal + verb I / be 4. have + verb III / been 5. verb I (s/es) 6. verb II

ENGLISH FUNCTIONS

Greeting Good morning (how are you?) Have a seat, please. What can I do then? Getting to know the symptoms Whats troubling you? What brought you here? What seems to be the problem? Doctor told me that you .. Etc.

Taking history of the present illness

- How long have you had this pain? - Where is the pain? - Can you tell me where it hurts? - When did you notice this? - How long has this been going on? - Does it bother you when you bend your back?

Taking past history - have you ever had chickenpox before? - did you ever have any fractures? - have you ever been operated? Taking family history - Do you have brothers or sisters? - Are they in a good health? - How about your relation with your wife? - What did your parents die for?

Taking social history - Do your parents live with - How do you get on with your work mates? - How long have you lived in .? - Do you go out drinking much?

Physical Examination English used must be polite Before the examination: - Could you take off your skirt, please? - Would you lie flat, please? - Do you mind taking off your pans? After the examination: - Ive checked you over pretty thoroughly but I cant find anything wrong.
