At 15 years old, William A. Smith moved to Glasgow to work in his uncles soft goods business. He joined the Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers and by 19 he was a Lance Corporal He also joined the Free Church College.

In 1883 he became a Lieutenant He was a teacher in the Sabbath School (Sunday School), at North Woodside Road The older boys were restless and bored So he used the methods and discipline he learned at the Rifle Volunteers to deal with them
