Math
Your children will be using a mathematics
program entitled “Everyday Math”. This
program teaches a brand new concept
almost every day.

Included in this program are fun

activities which are used to
help your children grasp those
concepts.
Books We Will Be Using

- Math Notebook
- Math Journal Workbook
- Math Folder
- Home Links Workbook
- Math Steps Workbook
- Math Skills Workbook
By the end of the first grade
your children will need to know:
- How to count to 100 forward and backwards
- How to add and subtract
- How to count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
- Basic time and money skills
- Sequencing of numbers
Tests are given after each unit in math.
Please make sure that your child
understands the material and PLEASE ask
us if there’s anything we can do to help.

Small group instruction is available

for those that need it.
Literacy
Our literacy program is broken into two groups:
Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop
Books We Will Be Using

- Source Book
- Handwriting Workbook
- Phonics Workbook
- Leveled Library
- Book of the Month
By the end of the first grade
your children will need to know:
- Their alphabet
- How to put the correct amount of
space in-between words
- How to read at least four levels higher
than they are right now
-Proper punctuation (periods, commas, etc…)
- Their vowels
- The Dolch words
Your child will soon
be given a list of all
the words that they
need to know by
the end of the first
grade (Dolch Basic
Sight Words).
Though we will go
over certain words
every week, please
make sure that
your child becomes
familiar with them.
Many of our children are now reading on
levels A, B and C (where they should be).
By the end of the year we would like them
to be on levels H, I and J.
There are several genres that the children
will be working on this year:

• Memoirs – writing about a memory

• Narrative Account – a fictional story
• Narrative Procedure – a “How To…” guide
• Report Writing – a nonfiction research paper
• Response to Literature – writing about something they
have just read
Every month the children
will be given a Book
Order Form. Return that
form by the date listed on
the back to insure your
book order. You are not
obligated to purchase
books from Scholastic,
but keep in mind that this
is a great way to get your
children to read fantastic
books at low prices!
If you have not already,
please send in the
mandatory $4.00 per
child for their weekly
Scholastic newspaper.
This newspaper is a
wonderful resource for
children and
encourages reading
through educational,
fun stories.
Homework
At the beginning of every
week your child
will have pasted their
homework assignments
for the rest of the week
in their “Homework
Notebook”
Homework is so important
because it reinforces what they
have learned in school.
Please make sure that your child
does their homework every night.

When the child has completed their

homework, please sign either the
homework, or the homework sheet.
You can leave us notes to if there is
something you’re unsure about.
Please check your
child’s
“Homework Folder”
EVERY SINGLE
NIGHT!

Your child will be given important notices

daily which need to be read and
acknowledged. Every so often there may
be something to fill out. Please do so and
return to their folder. Their folders are
checked daily, along with their homework.
If your child is absent they are
responsible
for their missed work. Unless they are
absent at the beginning of the week there
is no excuse for them not doing their
homework. After all, it is in their
“Homework Notebook”.

In any case, make sure they have a friends

phone number so that, with your
permission, they may call their friend in
case they are confused with that evenings
assignment.
Lateness and Attendance
As in any school, attendance is extremely
important. It is only when your child attends
school on a daily basis that they can learn
what they need to know to it’s full extent.

If your child needs to be absent for any

reason, please send a signed absent note.
If the child has seen any sort of doctor,
please send that notice to school as well.
Lateness is severely frowned
upon. We understand that
things happen, but when
your child arrives to school
late on a daily basis it
becomes a distraction
and a waste of valuable time.

Please teach your child about their

responsibilities. We appreciate it!
Emergency Phone Numbers
You have already filled out the
important Blue Cards given out
at the beginning of the year.

These cards are kept on file in case of an

emergency or in case we need to reach
your for ANY reason.
If you move, or change jobs, or do anything
else that requires a change to those blue
cards please notify us immediately of that
change. You can put the new numbers or
address in your child’s homework folder.
Holiday Glee Club
There may be several holidays
where there will be a holiday concert.
This concert will be held in the
auditorium during the morning hours.
Letters will be sent home detailing the
date and time of each concert.
Please respond with whether or not you can
attend so we can plan accordingly.
The Holiday Concert
is run by
Ms. Auriemma and
Ms. Bilan (1~211)
and especially
features your
children singing
and dancing to
Holiday tunes.
Discipline Code
We have five rules in our classroom
which we enforce daily:

4. Keep all hands, feet and objects to

yourselves.
5. Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
6. Stay in your assigned location at all times
7. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
8. Follow directions the first time they are given.
Everyone was given a discipline code in
their child’s homework folder. Please
familiarize yourself with our procedures
and protocols.

Thank you!
