Leveraging Learning Management System with Learning Activities

Objective
To

design and develop learning activities based on pedagogy elements. To integrate learning activities into Learning Management System that are to be used by teachers as a guideline in teaching and learning process.

Learning Management System

Learning

Management System is an electronic learning platform that are used to deliver, monitor and manage learning (Dawley, 2007; Aziz, Yunus, Lan, & Bakar, 2009).

In

21st century, education is growing rapidly in line with the development of technology. Coates (2005) in his study found that the Learning Management System (LMS) has been widely used in the world of education and can be found in every corner of the world.

Learning Activities
Learning

activities that to be designed and developed are based on:

Pedagogy Cooperative Learning

Pedagogy
Is

a combination of knowledge and skills required for effective teaching. LMS encourages the teachers to deliver collaborative teaching.

Pedagogy-based

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is a method of learning in which students work together in a small group and help each other in the learning and teaching process (Paul & Byrd, 2010). This method allows the students to go beyond and to encourage students to think critically and help improve their self-confidence (Macpherson, 2007; Syahza, 2008; Silberman, 2010; Chatti, 2010; Borich, 2011).

The Problem
Most

of today's LMS is focused on the delivery of learning material rather than learning process(Glynn (2012; Mohamed Azmi, Zeehan, Fahad, Maryam, & Hisham, 2012; Coates, 2005; Dowling, 2007; Rling, et al., 2008).

Although

LMS is widely used at various levels of schools, higher education institutions as well as companies to train their employees, but its effectiveness in education world is still being debated globally.

Why?
Previous

studies prove that no matter how sophisticated the technology used in the LMS, if not based on the principles of pedagogy, the LMS will not have a high value and even its effectiveness in learning can be doubted.

The

use of LMS has received strong encouragement from learning institutions so that the ongoing learning process becomes more effective with the pedagogy elements (Dowling, 2007).

How to Tackle?
Effective

use of LMS in learning requires application of appropriate pedagogy (Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 2005). The opportunity to integrate LMS and pedagogy is there and should not be left wasted (Christie & Garrote Jurado, 2007)

The expected result

Findings

of the study are expected to be able to provide guidance to teachers who use the LMS with the implementation of learning activities based on pedagogical elements.
