How Does Facebook Work? The Front End

Facebook uses a variety of services, tools, and programming languages to make up its core infrastructure. At the front end, their servers run a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) stack with Memcache. Linux and Apache- This part is pretty self-explanatory. Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system kernel. Its open source, very customizable, and good for security. Facebook runs the Linux operating system on Apache HTTP Servers. Apache is also free and is the most popular open source web server in use. MySQL:- For the database, Facebook utilizes MySQL because of its speed and reliability. MySQL is used primarily as a key-value store as data is randomly distributed amongst a large set of logical instances. These logical instances are spread out across physical nodes and load balancing is done at the physical node level. As far as customizations are concerned, Facebook has developed a custom partitioning scheme in which a global ID is assigned to all data. They also have a custom archiving scheme that is based on how frequent and recent data is on a per-user basis. Most data is distributed randomly. PHP:- Facebook uses PHP because it is a good web programming language with extensive support and an active developer community and it is good for rapid iteration. PHP is a dynamically typed/interpreted scripting language Memcache:- Memcache is a memory caching system that is used to speed up dynamic database-driven websites (like Facebook) by caching data and objects in RAM to reduce reading time. Memcache is Facebooks primary form of caching and helps alleviate the database load.Having a caching system allows Facebook to be as fast as it is at recalling your data. If it doesnt have to go to the database it will just fetch your data from the cache based on your user ID.

How Does Facebook Work? The Back End

Facebooks backend services are written in a variety of different programming languages including C++, Java, Python, and Erlang. Their philosophy for the creation of services is as follows: Create a service if needed Create a framework/toolset for easier creation of services Use the right programming language for the task Thrift (protocol) Thrift is a lightweight remote procedure call framework for scalable cross-language services development. Thrift supports C++, PHP, Python, Perl, Java, Ruby, Erlang, and others. Its quick, saves development time, and provides a division of labor of work on high-performance servers and applications. Scribe (log server) Scribe is a server for aggregating log data streamed in real-time from many other servers. It is a scalable framework useful for logging a wide array of data. It is built on top of Thrift. Cassandra (database) Cassandra is a database management system designed to handle large amounts of data spread out across many servers. It powers Facebooks Inbox Search feature and provides a structured key-value store with eventual consistency. HipHop for PHP HipHop for PHP is a source code transformer for PHP script code and was created to save server resources. HipHop transforms PHP source code into optimized C++. After doing this, it uses g++ to compile it to machine code.

Percepts Sunburn too has a huge following on Facebook. It was a unique way to publicize the event. There was minimal cost involved in spreading the word and creating a buzz. Hence Facebook is like a life-line for the modern day tech-savvy marketing teams of organizations. The Sunburn group on Facebook managed to have 6100 followers and is an ever increasing family. This is a forum for like minded, music aficionados to interact and spread the (music) love. Artist interactions and new additions to the festival were shared here.

Twitter is ranked as one of the ten-most-visited websites worldwide by Alexa's web traffic analysis. A February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network based on their count of 6 million unique monthly visitors and 55 million monthly visits. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastestgrowing website in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had annual growth of 1,382 percent, increasing from 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009. It was followed by Zimbio with a 240 percent increase, and Facebook with a 228 percent increase. Twitter has a user retention rate of forty percent.

Technology Implementation The Twitter Web interface uses the Ruby on Rails framework, deployed on a performance enhanced Ruby Enterprise Edition implementation of Ruby. As of April 6, 2011, Twitter engineers confirmed they had switched away from their Ruby on Rails search-stack, to a Java server they call Blender. Features of the Technological Implementation Used Open source -Twitter released several open source projects developed while overcoming technical challenges of their service. Notable projects are the Gizzard Scala framework for creating distributed datastores and the distributed graph database FlockDB. URL Shortener- t.co is a URL shortening service created by Twitter. It is only available for links posted to Twitter and not available for general use. Eventually all links posted to Twitter will use a t.co wrapper. Twitter hopes that the service will be able to protect users from malicious sites, and will use it to track clicks on links within tweets. Decentralized architecture - There is some decentralized architecture to enhance the
scalability of Twitter including Fethr and Cuckoo. Fethr adopts a fully decentralized scheme, which connects micropublishers in a single global network. Cuckoo classifies the micro blogging users into two categories, i.e., social network users and news media users.

Percept has an Electronic Music Festival called Sunburn (their apparent rise to fame). A special account has been created for Sunburn (@SunburnFestival) and they have managed to garner 6080 followers. Hence it was an instant hit to publicize this event on Twitter. All the major announcements were also released on Twitter and it was a unique platform for the event organizers to interact with the enthusiasts, as well as for the enthusiasts to interact with world renowned Djs and artists. Even links to their YouTube page and Facebook page were given when any new announcements were made.

Facts and Figures YouTube has 490 million users worldwide (unique visitors per month) 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US YouTubes demographic is broad: 18-54 years old More than 13 million hours of video were uploaded during 2010 and 35 hours of video are uploaded every minute.

Video technology Playback Viewing YouTube videos on a personal computer requires the Adobe Flash Player plug-in to be installed on the browser The YouTube site has a page that allows supported browsers to opt in to the HTML5 trial. Only browsers that support HTML5 Video using the H.264 or WebM formats can play the videos, and not all videos on the site are available. On YouTube, Percept Limited have a special Channel where all their videos are updated. This is a portal for all their faithful fans as well as other interested people to have a peak into their world. Every new event or announcement is put up here in the form of a video. Percept has been operational on YouTube since May 21, 2009. It has 71 subscribers to its Channel and it has over 1, 33,575 video views (as on 7/1/2012), hence touching a vast base.

Percept has also launched a special Sunburn Channel on YouTube. This is a channel for all the best electronic dance music. It also showed the live feed of the festival that occurs in Goa, hence allowing the not-solucky fans a chance to catch up on what they missed. The Sunburn Channel has 2,513 subscribers and 11,65,328 views as on (8/1/2012).

After researching on Percept and their Marketing Strategy on Social Media, I really feel it is a great step and a big success. The reason I consider it a success is explained below. Percept has pages on the three giants of the social media world, namely YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. They have a lot of fan following on all the pages and also have a wide platform to showcase themselves and enthrall their consumers (target audience). If we take into consideration the marketing of their product SUNBURN via the Social Networks, we can see that the event was publicized entirely online. Even ticket sales were handled entirely online. Every announcement was made on their various pages too. The advertising budget fell down considerably without losing the chutzpah or oomph factor. This was a prime example where clever marketing strategy helped in making the product a brand itself, hence making it self-sustaining. People are more aware of SUNBURN then Percept, this may be a slight disadvantage for brand equity, but in the end the sales of your products make the wheels of your company bandwagon rotate and Percept are zooming forward thanks to their clever tactics and energetic implementation.

Media markets are converging, but audience insight is not.

Media audiences are more involved than ever..

Media monetization has become more elusive. Media companies are drowning in data, but not capitalizing on it.

Improving consumer engagement in [todays] me-media age involves developing the right models for consumer interaction, harnessing analytics for better insight into consumer behaviors, and creating richer, more relevant and more engaging opportunities for consumer interaction, wrote Vernocchi and Wolf.

Good data management helps to solve queries such as: How many people are accessing more than one media property? Do I have duplicate or conflicting audience information from one channel to the next Reporting reveals what is happening in the business today and can answer questions such as: Amount of viewers that watched the program this season? Has the number increased? Results of a one-time promotion? What was the affect by the competing program? Which search words are the most common/popular on the website?

Analytics can answer questions such as: What is leading to a decline in subscriptions/viewers? What will online content demand be upcoming months? Which consumer segment is most likely to respond to this campaign? Business solutions combine these technologies to automate and optimize processes and enable real-time decisionmaking. These solutions answer questions such as: While the customer is on the call, what is the most relevant offering I can make? How can I execute campaigns while factoring constraints such as budget and policies?

Goal 1: Analyze audience insights and client ad spending across media properties.

Goal 1 Customer Examples A leading provider of publications, information and consulting services in the UK wanted a system that would deliver customer intelligence for more targeted management. Having grown through acquisitions, the business had many different pools of data. SAS enabled the company to pull diverse sources together into a complete view of the customer to drive a customer-focused approach. An online media company aggregated content coming from its properties in 20 major US markets. It also needed to categorize and make searchable content added by users, such as photos, blogs and comments.

Customer Example A major provider of online travel information and booking uses SAS to regularly compare different website layouts, looking for the combination of content and offers that drives the best revenue. Since the ideal offers and approaches will depend on customer needs/wants, SAS goes beyond traditional demographics based segmentation and identifies customer segment groups based entirely on customers purchasing behavior. The system learns from closed-loop feedback and retrains models for

Customer Example A Scandinavian magazine publisher was concerned that 50 percent of subscribersleft at first annual renewal. SAS helped the company manage one-toone communications with nearly 800,000 subscribers, which resulted in an increase in the renewal rate from 52.5 to 58.5 percent.

Goal 4 Customer Example A provider of information and publications for the legal profession used SAS to improve its ability to make the right offers to the right people at the right time. Data integration capabilities consolidated numerous data sources, including legacy databases and list sources, into a single customer-centric database from which highly targeted marketing campaigns can now be automated. Using SAS, the company realized a threefold increase in ROI on marketing spending, a 75-83 percent increase in customer retention, and a jump in sales conversion rates for customer acquisition from one in 33 to one in 11. Overall, the project delivered an ROI of 225 percent.

Goal 5 Customer Example A North American broadcaster with a presence in 14 countries (with hundreds of local stations) uses SAS to optimize its advertising inventory. Through better rating, demand forecasting and pricing, the company saw a 3 percent lift in ad revenue, representing an additional $25 million in the first year alone. A European publishing giant uses SAS to provide highquality and transparent reporting of critical circulation information, which is used to guide marketing and distribution initiatives for a broad range of publications and millions of readers. Before SAS, these reports were produced by manually consolidating Excel tables. Now the weekly process has been automated and are produced in halt the time.

The BBC implemented SAP HR in 1999 and currently operates the 4.7 version of the system. The HR sub components consist of Personnel Administration,Organisational Management, and Training and Event Management The BBC needed to improve and optimise the processes through its outsourced HR delivery partner. But it faced a number of challenges in understanding which improvements to prioritise and which route to take.

ROC recommended SAP Talent Visualisation software that not only aids the immediate creation of the organisational structure but also underpins cost effective ongoing maintenance of that structure. BBC benefitted largely due to this implementation of HCM system.A clear roadmap to produce logical improvements in the company was structured. Thus BBC was able to sustain and deliver broadcast effectively with a large viewerwship.
