QUALITATIVE SURVEY RESULTS

By Jordan Kent

The reason why I done a survey, that focuses primarily on using qualitative questions, is so that I can gain a more personal response from each person that takes it. This will allow me to evaluate and analyse each response so I can find out what they actually think and not just gain a statistic. I will quickly explain what is meant by the term qualitative. These type of questions are more open based questions that make the person write extended answers based on their opinions. They allow the person collecting the data to analyse each answer and get a more personal response instead of just a percentage.

WHY AND WHAT?

In this task I have used both primary and secondary research. Firstly primary research is any research that you have done personally, such as handing out questionnaires and interviewing people. Secondary research is research that has been done by other people and that you use. These could be reviews or results by another persons questionnaire. Some of answers were from the survey I handed out, and others were from peoples opinions from people on the internet. So I have used both types of research in this task.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

Secondary research is research that has been done by other people and that you use. These could be reviews, interviews done by other people or results that someone else had gathered. Some of answers were from the survey I handed out, and others were from peoples opinions from people on the internet. So I have used both types of research in this task. So I have showed the use of both primary and secondary research in obtaining qualitative data, that can be used for the production of my opening sequence.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

The questions that I used in my survey I picked so that I would gain a better understanding on what my target audience feels about the way opening titles are constructed. This means that when I come to make my opening title sequence, I will have a better understanding on what my target feels and likes.

MY SURVEY

One response that I got was When I see any bad issues in the opening I dont feel that bad and will normally just carrying on watching. Another response I got was If I saw some distressing issues I would feel quite bad about it and it would stay in my mind and make me think about it. The results that I gained show there was a mix in the way the react to distressing issues. Both interviewees implied that they would carry on watching. This shows me that if I was to use distressing issues and themes in my opening, then I will have to do so with some caution so that I do not upset my viewers to much that they will stop watching. Further research into other social realism films that have distressing issues could prove useful.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN SEEING DISTRESSING/UNCOMFORTABLE ISSUES AND THEMES IN A MEDIA TEXT?

Firstly, a person said that I feel that the media do handle issues like that well and I dont feel upset when watching them. Another person said I think that they represent those issues quite good as on TV you can call a number if you are affected. Therefore, from these two responses I found that my target audience feel that the current media providers, represent these issues well. I will therefore look at the way they do this and try to copy they way they do this so I achieve the same effect,

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE MEDIA REPRESENT AND EXPLORE DISTRESSING ISSUES (SUCH AS CHILD NEGLECT, VIOLENCE, ALCOHOL ABUSE, ADULTERY, UNDERAGE PREGNANCY ETC) IN CURRENT MEDIA OUTLETS (SUCH AS TV, RADIO, MAGAZINES ETC)?

For my opening sequence, I was thinking of an opening for a social realism film about crime and violence. This question will show me if my target demographic likes this idea or not. One response said It would make me carry on watching as I kind of like films like that. However, another persons response was completely different saying I'm not really into those types of movies so chances are I wouldnt enjoy them. This gives me two very conflicting opinions. I may have to re-think the use of crime issues as this could put off part of my audience from watching.

WHEN ISSUES OF CRIME AND VIOLENCE APPEAR IN A MOVIES OPENING, HOW WOULD REACT TO THIS? WOULD THIS AFFECT YOUR INTEREST IN THE FILM?

One of the most eye opening responses I got was: I dont really know of any. This tells me that some of my target audience dont watch social realism films, or films that have serious issues a lot. This could be a serious issues when I make mine, as some of my audience have never seen a film like it, so could jut stop watching it. But one good response was: Kes was a bit about child neglect and I think that they were successful. From this response, I found that if I go and watch Kes then I can find out how they represent these issues well, and use some of their techniques when I make my opening title sequence.

IN ANY FILM YOU KNOW OFF, REGARDING ISSUES OF CHILD ABUSE, VIOLENCE, ALCOHOL ABUSE ETC, CAN YOU STATE THE FILM AND GIVE YOUR OPINION IF THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL IN REPRESENTING THEM?

The first response I got was: Mine is the opening for Jaws because I felt like it created so much tension that it just made me keep watching it.. Another response I got was: I really enjoyed the opening to Pirates of the Caribbean cause off it had a lot of action in it. These two films opening sequences are very different. This shows me that my target audience is very mixed over their opinions. A lot of my audience may feel this way because of all the mainstream cinema that they have watched, and feel that this is the norm for movies to have. I will have to construct my opening sequence carefully so that I keep my audience happy and compelled to stay and watch.

CAN YOU NAME YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OPENING AND SAY WHY THIS WAS SO APPEALING TO YOU?

Some of the response that I got were: I like a fast paced intro as I feel more compelled to watch. Another person said: An intro that I can relate to. Lastly, Big explosions, guns, fast cars, stuff like that. The first and last responses are more for mainstream films and not for small social realism films, like the one that I will be producing. The ability to get explosions and fast cars for an school film would very difficult. The second response however, tells me that if my opening was found to be relatable by the people watching, then the will enjoy it more and therefore carrying on watching it.

WHAT THINGS IN A MOVIE OPENING WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO CARRYING ON WATCHING THE FILM?

In conclusion, I found out a lot of key information about my target audience for when I start to make my opening film sequence. I also found that some of the opinions/feeling held by some in my target audience, arent shared by everyone. This tells me that I have to be careful on what I use in my opening, as it may not please everyone. Furthermore, I found that some people in my target audience watch a lot of big mainstream films. This may then prove challenging when I make mine as they are not used to films like this, and may move on t a different film.
