CHAPTER 5

AIR ENVIRONMENT
Group 3 Hu t Lng Mnh Hong Trn Minh Dng

SOURCE OF AIR POLLUTION

Sources of air pollution are diverse. In regards to the air environment in urban areas, main sources of pollution pressures include construction and waste treatment
Industrial activities

Peoples daily activities

Traffic

SOURCE OF AIR POLLUTION

Emission volume of contaminant from traffic activities
In urban areas, traffic is the major cause of air pollution, particularly in regard to emissions of CO, VOC and NO2. Due to the higher number of motorcycles and their often poor quality motorcycles are the main contributor of contaminants, especially of CO and VOC. Meanwhile, trucks and buses release larger volumes of SO2 and NO2.

SOURCE OF AIR POLLUTION

Emission volume of contaminant from industries

Sources of air pollution caused by burning fossil fuels in the cement industry, metallurgy industry, thermo power plants and food and beverage production, metal production, wood production, forestry product processing, furniture production and paper production.

SOURCE OF AIR POLLUTION

Emission volume of contaminant from daily activities
Peoples daily activities cause a smaller amount of air pollution compared with other causes. Major contaminants are dust, SO2 and CO. Cooking using different fuels emits polluted gases and causes local pollution within some households or in their neighbors houses

EVOLUTION OF AIR POLLUTION

1. Dust Pollution -Industry dust from demolition projects, blasting operations, roads and dirt roads -> pose a serious health hazard. -The coal industry creates many health threats, including risks from coal dust and coal ash, some of which can be addressed through meaningful fugitive dust regulations. 2. NO2 Pollution NO2 is a reddish-brown gas with a pungent and irritating odour. It transforms in the air to form gaseous nitric acid and toxic organic nitrates. NO2 also plays a major role in atmospheric reactions that produce ground-level ozone, a major component of smog.

EVOLUTION OF AIR POLLUTION

3. CO Pollution Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue.

4. Noise Pollution - Noise pollution is displeasing or excessive noise that may disrupt the activity or balance of human or animal life. - High noise levels can contribute to cardiovascular effects in humans, a rise in blood pressure, and an increase in stress and vasoconstriction, and an increased incidence of coronary artery disease.

EVOLUTION OF AIR POLLUTION

5. Lead and BTX pollution (Benzene, Toluene and Xylene (BTX) - Lead Pollution & BTX is the introduction of lead into the atmosphere in a matter that it affects the environment. - Lead pollution primarily comes from lead smelters, metal processing plants and incinerators. Lead can cause birth defects in unborn children & Lead poisoning can kill a person. 6. SO2 Pollution - Sulfur dioxide is an invisible gas and has a nasty, sharp smell. It reacts easily to form harmful compounds. - SO2 emissions are from fossil fuel combustion at power plants and other industrial facilities

SOLUTION
_Peoples consciousness _Improve energy efficiency, reduce waste _Move to non-polluting renewable forms of energy production
